    California DOJ Approved Lock

When I go pick up my firearm along with my ID I'm suppose to bring a lock that was purchased recently. Are the approved ones suppose to look like the locks that they give you in the handgun case or are they suppose to be padlocks because I'm not sure if I'm searching these right. Like for instance Master Lock 107 is the one with the long cable part right?

Just want to make sure because the last two times I bought a handgun they let me walk out the door with just the box with no lock. I'm not going to name names don't want to get anyone in trouble.

I didn't know and did some internet research. Here's the DoJ page which appears to provide a huge list of approved locks:
As of January 1, 2002, no firearm may be sold, transferred, or manufactured within California unless that firearm is accompanied by a DOJ-approved firearms safety device (California Penal Code section 23620, et seq).

Just take one of the cable master lock clones. But you need a receipt showing you bought it in the last 30 days. Every time I need one I buy one from my wife (she collects them) and she gives me a computer receipt.

It might be easier to see if the LGS will sell one when you pick up the gun.

Turners gave me no grief for a safe affidavit.

From what I found on here is that there are few local gun stores that are like scalping locks. I'm picking up at a gun store I'm not too familiar with cause it was PPT.

They are free from most PD or Sheriffs. Hmm, not sure about a receipt though. I guess they can't make it THAT easy.

Safe affidavit does not work for handguns and Federal law. It should, but BATF says no.

Had a gun shop do this on a ppt once, the D-bag behind the counter wouldn't let me leave without buying(and installing so no returns once opened) a new lock. F them, they'll never see me in there again, too many other shops around that'll work with customers rather than bend them over for a $10 lock. I always bring my own lock to ppt now, just in case... Never been asked for a receipt. I do like 71mustys method, I'll have to remember that one!

                      Mine was a rifle pickup.
                      Thanks Librarian.

Glock provided me with a cable lock when I bought my G27. I came home and promptly misplaced the keys two days later so I used a SMALL cheap pair of wire cutters I bought some time in the past from Harbor Freight ... cut the cable and tossed it in the trash.

Sigh...so stupid...I didn't look, but I suppose 'IT' was DOJ approved...

Was the glock cable lock that was provided legal? I think all handguns come with the cable lock but I don't think you can use them.

I think it was cool that my original gun store let me just go without a lock but then again it was illegal. I bought p250, browning buckmark and 17hmr rifle from them and they just let me walk out with the box.

It's hard enough finding a gun that is legal to own in SF now this lock thing too...

I'm probably going to buy a box of doughnuts for like 5 bucks and head to a police station trade for a lock then ask for some "proof" of purchase.

I have a bucket of locks but never looked at the brands on them nor checked pedigree.

Go to Big5 and buy a gun lock. It is a padlock with a long and flexible rubber covered cable for the hook part. Comes in a hard shrink wrap about $10 bucks. They give you a register receipt which has a date on it. It is probably made in China or India but says CA approved. that is good enough to put in the case and pick up your gun. Take a small pad lock with you because the gun case itself is supposed to be locked when leaving the store. Most stores do not care about this part of it because it is between you and the local PD if they see you outside and question a hand gun in an unlocked case.

Now I'm confused. Is the "lock law" suppose to lock the firearm or the case. I thought the CA DOJ approved lock was suppose to lock the case. That's why I was questioning why you would need a cable lock to lock the case?

Sorry I'm like super new to this just want to get this right and not look like a fool.
