AR Pistol Optic

Finishing up my first 9mm AR pistol build, and had an optic question. I'm going to go with a simple red dot, either Primary Arms or Aimpoint. What I've noticed is some mount them on a tall riser, which I presume is for co-witness with BUIS. And some are mounted very low on the rail with no riser. Is there an advantage either way, other than the co-witness aspect?

It is mostly a matter of what you are comfortable with. Because of the design of the AR, there is no drop between the axis of the barrel and your shoulder like you have on many rifles. The riser usually means that you can shoulder the rifle and see through the sight without straining your neck. On a pistol, this point is often moot, as you don't always fire it from the shoulder. In which case, having the red dot closer to the axis of the bore works just fine. On an AR pistol, you can use either setup. It is more a matter of personal comfort. And it also depends on how you plan on using the pistol. If you are going to brace the buffer tube on your shoulder like you would a rifle, a standard riser and AR sight set would be perfect. If you are planning on shooting it either held out from your body and braced with tension from the sling, or with the buffer tube braced on your cheek, a lower setup might be better.

Risers come in low, mid and high, low didn't work for me unable to get a good view red dot, mid was perfect for me also absolute co witness if I flip up my Magpul buis YMMV

One thing I learned, a low sight on an AR does not work at all for me. Bushnell TRS-25 without some sort of riser is simply impossible to see out of.

I ended up going with a vortex spitfire 1x, have been absolutely pleased with it. Reticle is very visible even with the lighting off. I don't think I've ever turned the lighting on except to play around with it.

I also went mid with a Bushnell TRS25 it's great for my 9mm build

Need at least a cowitness riser. Faster with a 1/3 cowitness

I just went with milspec sights for CQB.

You can't shoulder it anymore. Its really designed to be a full auto SBR spray & pray 30 round subgun. So what is really the point in cali? Red dots and even irons are useless. Best bet is a laser.
