Good non-subcompact CC guns?

Trying to find a good first carry gun, but I'm really wary about subcompacts. I'm a bigger guy, and subcompacts don't fit my hands well.

I would also a prefer a gun with a .22 variation, both for my own practice, and so I can teach my daughter how to shoot on a gun with controls in the same place as mine (which I'm sure would eventually become hers as I acquire more) when she's old enough.

Looking for something in the $4-700 range, and I'm not philosophically opposed to buying used. Prefer 9mm but not married to it.

I really like what I've been seeing/hearing about the M&P9, but I'm having a hell of a time finding one. Shields seem to be everywhere, regular M&P9s, not so much.

My wife has her heart set on a 19, I kind of want something different. I'd like to expand my collection.

Shield is the only one left on the roster, so the full size (meaning doublestack) M&P can only be had by PPT.
The only S&W 9mm other than the Shield left on the roster is the SD9

For "compact".... these are all doublestack:
Glock 26
Springfield XD 3"
H&K P2000
Ruger SR9C

These would still be considered "compact" rather than "subcompact" even though they are the smallest offerings from those companies. All of the above are double stack and will hold 10 rounds
As small as the G26 is, keep in mind that the .45cal 10rd G30 is about the same size and a fraction of an inch thicker.
Having larger hands, it's really the thickness of the grip that you are going to "feel", aside from your pinky not having purchase.

.22 conversion kit?
Generally not worth it at this level.
The cost of the conversion kits are several hundred... nearly what you can buy a .22 for.
The conversion kits become "worth it" when you get into the 1911 and other $1200+ guns.

FWIW, I'm not a fan of the conversion thing...... and its expensive.

IMO, Buy a good Browning Buckmark .22 then another dedicated mid size and be done with it.

My .22 [a S&W which I don't recommend] is my most shot pistol with newbies, kids and myself....22's are just flat out fun and cheap to shoot.

i have big hands.... the Glock 19 [ I have the 23] is a good size for a small pistol....its all about practicing your grip, IMO. You can get mag extensions and make those work pretty good.

i also just bought the shield and surprisingly I can shoot it OK after fiddling with my grip. I hated the shield trigger, long take up which works against guys with big hands, it need s a forward trigger, IMO Apex on order.

i find the concept of "22 for practice" is overrated when using as a "stand in" for a larger platform with "same controls".

practice with the POI, recoil, and noise level you are going to be using for defense/carry.

get youths and women on 9mm first, load one round at a time.

I would agree that a good .22 pistol is a better choice than a conversion kit.

And you get two separate pistols.

Springfield Armory Range Officer Champion. Or Compact. In 9mm. It's a dream to shoot, easy to put slimline grips on if you think it's too "fat", reliable as all get out, and simple. Don't mind if it gets a ding or two. Good capacity, great for big handed people (yours truly) and yet easy enough to conceal.
