    M&P "safety" garbage question

At what point did they start installing pop up LCIs and magazine disconnects? I have an off roster model im looking to trade out and the question has came up once or twice. Mine doesn't have either and I'm curious when it was made. S&W doesn't have a serial lookup like some manufacturers do and while this info won't be accurate to my use at least ill know something about their production history.

I think if you call S&W they may be able to give you a production date. Ask for Customer Service to inquire about it.

Separate enactments required first, a prominent chamber load indicator (CLI) and later, also, a mag disconnect.

I don't recall the dates and the calguns Wiki may provide that information, or someone else will chime in about it.

My best recollection is around 2007 and 2009, but not certain about it

CA passed the law in 2006 which required new handguns to have LCI and mag disconnects to be added to the roster. This law took effect in 2007, which is pretty close to when the M&P line came out.

Unlike today, the microstamping requirement wasn't in effect at the time, so manufacturers were capable of making changes and having their "new" handguns added to the roster.

If the M&P line didn't already have the LCI and mag disconnect prior to 2007 then it most likely was added between 2007 and 2009 since they've had this feature for some time now. The microstamping requirement became effective in 2013 and no "new" handguns have been added since.

        FYI.

CA requires a Chamber Load Indicator (CLI) [PC 16380], not a Loaded Chamber Indicator (LCI).

All Chamber Load Indicators are Loaded Chamber Indicators, but not all Loaded Chamber Indicators are Chamber Load Indicators.

Chamber Load Indicator (CLI) on the S&W M&P Shield...

Loaded Chamber Indicator (LCI) on the S&W M&P Shield...

        Penal Code 16380
As used in this part, "chamber load indicator" means a device that plainly indicates that a cartridge is in the firing chamber. A device satisfies this definition if it is readily visible, has incorporated or adjacent explanatory text or graphics, or both, and is designed and intended to indicate to a reasonably foreseeable adult user of the pistol, without requiring the user to refer to a user's manual or any other resource other than the pistol itself, whether a cartridge is in the firing chamber.

Starting 01-01-2006, semi-auto centerfire pistols were required to have either a CLI or a MDM and semi-auto rimfire pistols were required to have a MDM.

Only the Shield has the "popup" CLI. I think the CA models were finally released here in early 2013.

If you have the box and spent case, you can see the dates. They are pretty close to the production date for your pistol.
