    What would you do...

At a gathering this morning with 'coffee house friends', a conversation started regarding the gun roster. Long story short, I was offered as high as $1,250 (started at $1,000) for my Springfield 1911 9MM (asking price for used is around $1,050 per what I see in the CG Marketplace forum). This guy has been looking for one for over a year (they're in demand, on the gun roster but very hard to find). While I am not attached to the gun, it's not for sale...or is it?!

Which got me thinking...how much $$$ (over general asking price in the marketplace) would have to be offered to sell a pistol you enjoy? Not a safe queen - I'm referring to a firearm that you take to the range at least 3x/year (whether or not it is on the roster)?

I took my Sig P229 legion to the range and a guy asked me if i wanted to sell it. it is one of my favorites, so I said i will sell it $1200 above what I paid for. i said it to get him off my back and if he said yes, then i would consider it. To me everything is for sale at the right price, but for off roster guns, the higher the price, unless i really need to get sell it.

I bought my Tanfoglio Elite Match 45 new for $670 OTD....sold it for $1200 a year later. I like my CZ 97B w/CGW package slightly more and figured the Elite Match was fairly maxed out at that price. Nice gun, but cash wins sometimes

I sold my 9mm Springfield 1911 SS Loaded to a Calgunner few months ago for mid $900s after I bought it new for just couple of months. No regrets. It was a fine pistol, but I'm not into 1911s. My approach is to sell if I'm not crazy about it.

Depends on your circumstances. If you don't need it, has no sentimental value, little/no chance for further appreciation, and you have a dozen other guns to use, then sell it. You'd make a good profit on a used gun, that's uncommon.

$1250 is pretty good. I know they aren't nearly as common as the .45 but still are obtainable. I'd probably let it go for maybe a tad more then buy another one when I found one. In a couple years I'll be moving and may even consider selling some of my off roster stuff if I get enough for them.

That being said I've never sold a gun, only bought. I have some family guns that will never be sold but otherwise I'd probably let most anything else go for the right prix but I doubt I'd ever find anyone to agree to my prices.

If it's a gun I like and use and would likely be unable to replace (for whatever reason) I would ask a lot. My personal price would have nothing to do with fair market value. It's the price at which I'd be willing to sell this gun today. The price where I would feel good about the sale either way - Happy keeping my gun or happy selling it for a big price.

Depending on how I felt about it I would set my personal sale price at 50% to 150% above market value. Maybe double.

I generally make my gun purchases based on my feelings and not so much hard cold reason. I fall in love with guns and buy them and am happy.

              YMMV

                What would you do...

While "everything has a price" and I won't disagree, this is a basic difference between value and price. For example, I had a 10 year old car, ran great, no problems, paid off, etc., blue booked for probably $1000. However if I got $5000 for,it what could I have gotten that was even as close to delivering me the usefulness? The value of the car far exceeded its monetary quantity.

There's a lot of reasons for not selling something. Why do people go through all the hassle of making lowers from 80% frames when fully complete lowers can be had for a fraction of the price?

They're not liberals, they're leftists. Please don't use the former for the latter. Liberals are Locke, Jefferson, Burke, Hayek. Leftists are progressives, Prussian state-socialists, fascists. Liberals stand against the state and unequivocally support liberty. Leftists support state tyranny.

To the OP, it is not so much the amount of cash on top of the going rate, but how much cash am I willing to get to part with an item.

For instance, would I part with $1,250 cash for a Springfield 1911 in 9mm? If my answer is no, then getting $1,250 for selling one is good. If my answer is yes, then getting $1,250 for selling one is not worth it. At least this is how I see things when buying and selling.

                    Good luck!

As a couple others already said it would depend on how much I liked the gun and whether or not it had any sentimental value to me. If it were for my 1960's Sears .22 that my dad gave me it would have to be a ridiculously high amount.

I also have a Springfield 1911 9mm. I don't think I would take $1250 for it because there isn't much out there I want. Now if your friend happens to have a NIB S&W Model 13 or 14 have him PM me!

Tell him to order one from osagecountyguns. It comes out to just over $1250 after taxes/fees/DROS and he gets a brand new one and you get to keep yours.

I sell guns I end up not liking or that I no longer use, not to make a little money.

                          ^^^ This.

Also, The Springfield 1911 9mm is an on roster gun and contrary to gossip, a very common gun. THey come up for sale in LNIB condition for anywhere from $950 to $1050 minus your haggling power.

I can see $1250 if your SA 1911 9mm is a "Range Officer" model (OP did not mention), if not, $1250 is way too much for the stainless on roster SA 1911 9mm.

I would advise my friend to look in the Calgun adds and pick one up for much less or order new like ^^.

I ran into one a week ago. A current production and it had uneven lines on the flats of the slide. This is the third one I've seen with same problem. Also the frame tang is not blended with the beavertail. Do you guys see the same problem with their latest batch?
