3rd gen has the finger grooves some people like them some people like the glocks without. 1st gen I believe is all smooth and 2nd gen is smooth but how some rough marks on the handle.

1st gen just G17(and maybe 19), it has no rail or grip lumps and some minor difference in internal parts.

2nd gen include 40 caliber and started without lump or rail but was later add on the rail(some people call it 2.5 gen).

If you see both rail and lump on your glock that's a 3rd gen glock. Some people call the SF(short frame) glock and/or the single stack glock 3.5 gen.

Also, there is a 4th gen coming out(?) that have more aggressive texture on the grip and different serration on the slide. It's call Rough Texture Frame.

If you happened to get a 2nd gen glock you can ship it to Glock and have it up grade for free(but not shipping charge). Call them first before you do.
3rd gen not necessary better than 2nd gen, in fact lots glock fan hated the grip lumps. And lot's glock fan will buy 3rd gen glock and either DIY or sent it to smith to get rid of grip lumps. I don't care one way or another. But if you are going to run after market barrel or conversion barrel in your glock, get the 3rd gen. Some says 2nd gen will not fit conversion barrel, some say 2nd gen G22 can't handle .357sig's power...etc. Just get the 3rd gen and be done with it.

          As seen below.

Gen 2.5 has no rail, but has the finger grooves.

What do they upgrade ? The frame? So if I send them my Gen2 frame they replace it with a railed one for free. Kinda sounds to good to be true.

No, all they will do is to replace all the internal part to 3rd gen. No frame work will be added, so yes it is too good to be true.
You know, the 2nd gen and 3rd gen used price only different by $20 to $30. In my opinion, just get the 3rd gen. Unless you dislike the finger group.

Glock charges $150 to replace your frame. Requesting an OD frame replacement costs the same.
All worn out parts are replaced for free.

If you do this, the frame will have a different serial number.
Not sure, how this effects people in CA. I believe, it may have to be sent to a CA FFL who'll DROS it back to you.
I know in other states, Glock sends it to your address. Not sure for CA.

I had a Gen1 G17 until it blew up recently. Bummed me out, because I liked the feel of the grip MUCH more than the later generations.

No. I just spoke with them on Friday about doing this on my destroyed G17. They said they don't do that.
