I'm in the market for a Glock 19 and understand the Gen 4 is only available to LE in CA. Does anyone know if it will be available to the general public in the future?

Brand new, no.
Gen 4 Glocks are not on the California "not unsafe handgun roster" so they are not allowed to be sold brand new to us civilians.
Now, you can find them on the used market as it is legal to sell off roster guns private party, but be prepared to pay a premium. good luck!Comment

Not at this time, maybe in 10 - 15 years if roster is struck down.
It's legal to own, infringed CA citizens can buy from PPT or consignment, you can move here with them in CA legal configuration, and you can receive them as a gift from out of state through intrafamilial transfer (parent/grandparent/child) in CA legal configuration.Comment

Thanks for the responses. I should have known better. It seems like every gun I want I can't get here new. Frustrating.Comment

Couldn't Glock pays for the recertification and micro stamping of each model Gen 4 that they want to sell in CA?Comment
-
Well, technically you are right.
Yes they could, but seeing as microstamping is a complete waste of time and money and would do nothing but bring up the final cost of your gun, there is not a single company that is remotely interested in pursuing it.Comment

Microstamping is insanely expensive and the technology doesn't really exist. Basically it is the politician's having back door gun control
CA is a large market but no one really will jump through all of these hoops just for one state, especially when the politicians can just change the laws again and again.
Edit: It is hard running a business if politicians can arbitrarily change the rules constantlyLast edited by static2126; 12-30-2015, 1:39 PM.Comment

If Glock did this just for the CA market, would you as a consumer pay extra for it? Let's say the cost of certification and stamping increases the cost of each gun by $200. Would you as a consumer, buy a Gen 4 Glock in CA at any local gun store? It's basically the same as paying the increased markup from PPT sales. Or would you rather spend your hard earned money on something else?Comment

Not with all of the garbage they'd have to add to it.If Glock did this just for the CA market, would you as a consumer pay extra for it? I would not buy a Glock with microstamping or a magazine disconnect, even if that is what it took me to get a laser shooting Glock Gen 18 in the future
Save for the Sig P210, I do not and would not own any guns with a magazine disconnect
Edit: Your average gun buyer shoots like 6 inch groups at 7 yards and all firearm purchases are driven by price. They will not care enough for Gen 4 vs Gen 3Last edited by static2126; 12-30-2015, 1:46 PM.Comment

The only way I see micro stamping can work economically (assuming the technology actually exists) is for all the manufacturers to send their firing pin to the same place to get it done. It's going to be prohibitively expensive for each manufacturer to do their own.
If one wants a Gen4 Glock 19 it's easier to just pay the premium on it. They come up for sale all the time.Comment

Like others have said, it would be insanely expensive to have a handgun strictly for the CA market.
Plus it would only be a mater of time before some new law gets passed that requires yet another "safety requirement" from the manufacturer for them to sell in CA.
Micro stamping is not a crime fighting tool, it's just a way for CA Goverment to limit sales of handguns in CA. They pulled the same BS with the spent brass casing.
OP, buy a Gen 3. I've owned both and shot them back to back. Spent a day at the range to compare the difference in recoil. Some say they feel slightly less recoil. I felt ZERO difference after multiple mags and various ammo. Sold my Gen 4 the next day. If you have large hands and need the interchangeable blackstrap, then the Gen 4 might be a good idea.Comment
