You can't get a pistol lower anymore in California unless it's a PPT, or a 80% if I'm correct. You cannot just get a regular lower and slap on a pistol lower.

baboosh has a pistol lower he sells. IIRC. Can buy an 80% and some tools and build one. SSE compliant. At first.

It needs to be acquired via SSE2.

Which means the pistol needs to be a dimensionally compliant bolt-action single shot pistol or a dimensionally compliant break-top/open single shot pistol.

I recall someone telling me that by owning a short upper like the MK18 one the OP mentions and not having a registered AR pistol lower, can be a illegal weapon felony. Is that true?

Yes. It's called constructive possession. Of a SBR.

Too bad the OP can't answer any questions...

nope. a while ago some cop was busted for having an unregistered machine gun. the feds threw the book at him.

just build it into a pistol using an 80%.

Having an upper with a barrel less then 16 inches is only a possible problem if the person also has an AR15 complete rifle or just a rifle lower. If there is no "legal" configuration that can be made, that is a problem. So people should have a pistol lower or complete AR pistol if they are also in possession of a short barreled upper.
