    Sig 1911 External Extractor??

    Sig fans,

How difficult is it to remove and maintain the external extractor?? I am OCD when it comes to maintaining my firearms and this is one of those things I'd like to be able to do on a regular basis.

Also, how is the craftsmanship, the fitting of frame/slide and small parts, and the internal machinings of the Sig 1911s?? I asked because I am thinking of getting one sometime end of January or February. Which model do you recommend for a budget of around $780.00.00 to $890.00.00

    Thanks gang.

I never field stripped mine but the only 1911 ive ever owned and handled was a xo stainless. Fit and finish was nice for the price range. Spent casings ejected like they should and i would not hesitate to buy another sig 1911. I think i paid 850 for mine.

Mine is the TTT model (Two Tone Target). I had constant ftf's and ftl's.The ftf's stopped at around 800 rnds. At that point I replaced the slide stop with a Wilson Combat Bullit Proof and the ftl's stopped after that. Haven't had any issues since.
Unless you go high end 1911's are a crap shoot imo. Funny but the most reliable 1911's I've owned were all WW 2 vintage.

I had a Sig1911 before. Never had problems. External extractors require lil maintenance. No tensioning required because then tension comes from the spring. You need to punch that pin.

if it involves punching out a pin, doing it on a regular basis will wear things out faster.

            just my two cents.

DON'T take out the extractor. Leave it for the factory. FYI the Sig extractor is totally different than the S&W extractor.

It's a good 1911 for the price. Pretty much all the Sig 1911's are built the same except for cosmetic differences. I like the XO model and the TTT. Both are on the roster. The thing I don't like is the smaller thumb safety and the scalloped beavertail.

Ext extractors require a lot less maintenance than a 1911 with an internal ext.

Leave it until it breaks. Then call up Sig and tell them you need to send it in. Should be free of charge. I shoot more accurately with my Sig Stainless Rail than my CGW modded SP-01. They're great pistols.

I have a couple of Sig 1911s. I have had no issues with any of them, but I do prefer shooting my 1911R SS. All of them are gtg and I would recommend.

Well, the going price on a new Sig 1911 is a bit over your budget.

I plan to buy a TTT. I just dig the two tone and burl grips (and it's on roster).

The biggest gripes are about the non-traditional slide contours and external extractors. (as you already know). I've not heard any real complaints about fit/finish/accuracy/maintenance/etc on the Sig specific forum I subscribe to.

Now, I am a Sig fan. But for your budget, you might look at a Springfield Loaded, either Parkerized or Stainless. If SSE(1) was still in effect, I'd say a Ruger SR1911. I picked up a CMD last year. I see them in the marketplace for prices within your budget. It was below your budget under SSE so I bought more mags and more ammo.

                            Good Luck in your hunt.

An internal 1911 extractor has to be taken out and "tensioned" periodically as the steel takes a set and extractor tension declines. External extractors are spring loaded and normally never require any kind of adjustment.
