Base for a race gun in CA...G17 or G34?

I won a GSSF Unlimited match with a stock G34 (my HD gun) and won a new Glock. Naturally, I'm going to build a new competition Glock that I don't really need in the hopes that I can use it to win another Glock. It will be for GSSF, so it has to be a Glock.

If you were building a race gun, would you go G34 or G17 in California? In a free state I see everyone runs a G17 with a compensator, but as threading is a no go I'm thinking of a G34 instead. I considered a G17 with a ported Lone Wolf barrel and a KKM threaded barrel/comp for out of state, but I'm torn.

This will be a base gun. It will be getting a new trigger (thinking ZEV tech with little/no pretravel), optic (ALG 6 second mount with Primary Arms or Aimpoing RDS), mag well, mag release, beavertail and grip tape so the stock Glock 34 extras aren't really a big deal.

Any help/advice from those of you who compete is appreciated. I can't decide between the 17 and 34. Thanks.

Same frame. I don't see why it would matter which you pick. You'll end up replacing everything else anyway... Pick what you have already, or which ever one you can get for cheaper IMHO.

How is a threaded barrel out of the question? this company is in California and they sell threaded barrels.

Glock 34 is bigger, longer barrel, more accurate. Doesn't really make since to me that anyone would put a comp on a 17. What I see alot of is 34's with weight reduction and low powered springs/low powered ammo.

If you won a local match with a G34, I would definitely stick with the same gun. Sell the one you won and use that money to modify your G34.

I find that the 34 is quicker sight alignment than my 17, but still prefer the 17.

An open racegun shooting major 9 or minor? Do you want your open racegun to point and cycle fast, or track smooth and cycle soft?

There is no major or minor for GSSF. I could go either way as I've used both and each has it's pluses and minuses.

G34. Try run a stage with a G17 to direct compare. Some prefer the G17 for balance and transition speed.

Compensators are not illegal - it's the threaded barrel that's the issue. You can permanantly attach a compensator on a threaded barrel - needs to be welded. Obviously this is a major problem/non-starter for Glocks should you need to remove/attach the barrel.

Perhaps try a ported G34? Are you going to only play in GSSF?

G17 for carry, general purpose HD, etc
G34 for a small bump in accuracy, speed, when size doesn't matter.

When you strip parts off the gun to upgrade them, which gun's parts will be more valuable to sell?
