Like someone posted earlier, you have to remember it's not a button that you push at all. You sort of pivot it downward and inward towards your palm. It's pretty easy to release once you get used to it.

(I'm the original poster). With what I'm reading here, probably wouldn't be an
issue - just surprised me at the time.

      Thanks for all the replies.

It will get a bit more free with range time. But not so much that it becomes unsafe. My USP 40 compact was noticibly stiff originally, but now its perfect. Grats with the purchase if you get one..I love mine.

it's so odd, i feel mine is very easy to actuate. you should have someone else with an hk feel it and see if something is wrong.

i notice on my P2000, it's a bit difficult to just use my thumb or index/middle fingers. if i use as a combination, thumb/index, or thumb/middle, the mag pops right out.

All the HKs (two USPs, a USP Compact, a P2000, a P7M8) that I've handled have fairly strong springs on their mag releases, but they're not so strong that I need to use two fingers to actuate it.

I always say to use your index finger rather than your thumb to actuate the lever because it keeps your finger off the trigger (esp if you're reloading off a partial mag) and because you don't have to shift your shooting grip to do so.

It's the Walther P99's mag release that I really hate. It has a similar paddle release to the HKs, except it's narrower and inset into the trigger guard from the sides, so being used to finding paddles that stick out rather obviously, i can never find the P99's release by feel alone (although I suppose that if I used one a lot, I'd get used to it...).
