    FN 5.7 Handgun ammo

    Hey All,

A question from a new guy...I just purchased an FN 5.7 pistol. Why? Long story but I like it...Anyway without discussing the merits or lack of with the caliber I need help with ammo.

There are about 15 different types and I am a bit confused about what is ok what is not & what is still available etc...Additionally, can anyone point me in the right direction to find the ammo to begin with either thru the 'net or locally. I'm in the OC...

Thanks ahead of time for the help.

    Happy Holidays

There are actually only about 4-5 factory rounds available. If you like science-fiction TV shows, try that site. If you want info specific to 5.7x28, hit this site. It's sponsored by the only people that make commercially available ammunition in 5.7x28 other than FNH. Are you LEO? If so, get letterhead for some SS198LF.

        SS190
        SS192
        SS195LF
SS196SR <-- no longer in production
SS197SR <-- most likely what you'll find at the local store
SS198LF <-- Box says LEO/MIL only, can be had on gunbroker at extortionate prices.

If your local stores don't carry it, I would buy a case online - most cost effective.

SS190 - designated "armor piercing" and not legal to own.
SS192 - Standard HP, voluntarily pulled from distribution by FN because the Brady Bunch got their panties in a wad because it could go through a level II vest <shock>
SS195LF - lead-free primer version of SS192. Probably the one you want to get.
SS196SR - Heavier, slower projectile. "varmint round" with orange tip
SS197SR - Same as SS196SR, but with a blue tip
SS198LF - LE/MIL restricted.. no particular reason why (not AP ammo)

That's technically incorrect. I have heard it's legal to own SS190 (even seen it on sale on gunbroker), it's just impossible to find (FN severely restricts its sale). The bullet construction is identical to SS109, that is, most of it is not steel. The one time I have seen it at an out of state gun show, it was $20 PER ROUND. NO THANKS.

SS195 is virtually identical to SS192, except for the lead free primer. I have heard these go bad over time but cannot confirm that.

"The Firing Line" doesn't allow SS195 because the jacket can separate and fly back if the shooter is an idiot and hits the target holders, but SS197 is range safe, and the primers don't have a limited life span.

Just checked out with the ATF on armor piercing ammo and it doe slook like it can be bought...

FN restricts sales of SS190 (AP) to drop-shipments from a bonded warehouse direct to the department making the purchase. We've handled some sales for this ammo and the shop never sees it - we just take the money, make the order, send it along with payment, and hope they get their ammo.

What that means is that if you see it on the open market, it likely was stolen from the department, since generally resale of department equipment is not allowed. There might be a few cases where the department was simply an intermediary for an officer to purchase the ammo for their personal use and they chose to sell it off afterwards, but I still wouldn't touch the stuff. Too risky.

I have legally acquired two loaded rounds of SS190, a bunch of shell casings for it (crimped primers! whee!), and the factory cartridge box (gov/mil/leo sales only marked).

Legally. Oh, and for free BTW

I would have had a full box of it, but I had too much fun disposing of it in a full-auto and suppressed P90.

stock up at basspro in rancho cuc. best prices ive found.....they got both the 195 and the 197. I beleive it was 19.99 last time I bought a box...dont bother with turners, never had it in stock, and most mom and pop places run from 23.99 all the way up to 29.99, atleast what I have seen here in riverside..or just buy bulk online!!!

                        check out eliteammunition.com as well.

Games played with the ball, and others of that nature, are to violent for the body and stamp no character on the mind. Let your gun, therefore, be the constant companion of your walks." Not to go OT - but could you put AP 5.7 rounds in a PS90 since it is a long gun?
