    S&W 686 SSR

I'm having trouble with purchasing a Smith & Wesson 686 SSR. I really like the gun, but many of the gun shops by me have not had it in stock. I found the gun on Grab-A-Gun and I was stoked.

When checking with my local gun shop about facilitating the sale, background check, etc. I was told that they couldn't verify if the gun was CA compliant.

Here is how they list it on Grab-A-Gun...
    SKU: GAG_SW178012FC
    UPC: 022188780123
    Manufacture Part Number: 178012

Here is how they list it on Bud's...
    Model: 178012
    UPC: 022188780123

Here is how they list it on S&W...
    SKU: 178012
    Model: 686 SSR

My local gun shop told me the SKU number from Grab-A-Gun should have an "A" at the end. When I called Grab-A-Gun they had no idea what they were talking about.

Basically my question is this... How can I tell if the damn thing is CA compliant? I don't want to order a gun online that my gun shop has to return and I get stuck paying a fat re-stocking fee.

    ANY insight would be appreciated.

What you care about is what is listed on the current CA Roster as qualified. That number MUST appear on the sales paperwork or they will kick it out.

When checking with my local gun shop about facilitating the sale, background check, etc. I was told that they couldn't verify if the gun was CA compliant.
I would listen carefully to that statement as they probably know what they are talking about.

Have you tried to have one of your local gun stores order a ssr for you?

Don't know where you're at, but Turners had them on sale (like $30 off) for under $900 a couple of weeks ago.

The gun you want is listed as shown below. If it doesn't have the A, it's not approved.

I just saw one at a gun store in Pleasanton for $999. Not cheap, but available.

Alternatively, if you can find an FFL that will allow you to SAE the gun (Single Action Exemption), the gun doesn't need to be on the roster.

                  It's a beautiful gun.
I'm a little concerned about the wood magazine, though.

It comes with a rubber magazine that you can use instead. The wood mag looks beautiful, but the rubber is more functional if you are going to drive the gun hard.

Call the vendor and speak with a person who knows what you are talking about. Explain to them you would like to purchase it, but must confirm the SKU number ends with and "A" . There will also be an "A" stamped under the top strap. Explain this is required for California. If they confirm it has the A, make sure the invoice clearly states this. Some vendors are aware of this, some are not. Make sure you have documented confirmation, or your FFL may not want to be involved. A lot of online vendors only list the SKU number without the A because it may not occur to them it may be significant. Only way to know is to ask.

Send it to a shot that can SAE it. Then the A stamp is irrelevant.

I recently purchased a 625 Performance center revolver from a gun broker seller and the Part number on the box did not have the "A" on it but the gun did. Just have the seller look under the top strap for the A stamp.
There is a picture of the stamp location on the Ca DOJ website.

There's also the same picture of the A on the top strap posted about 12 posts upwards where I put it hours ago......
