+1 on Blue Book being useless. I would have 10 more guns if I could buy them at Blue Book prices! Can't help on price but I do know what you mean about a 3" barrel. I think that is the perfect length. I am currently looking for a Taurus 941 with a 3" barrel.

I won't bust out the 3" k-frame collection, but will say I have the same old-sk00l 3" M60 full-lug/adjustable as AR-15 Barrels does as well (EDIT: just re-looked, mine has a forged hammer/trigger not MIM) - my other 3" J-frame is a 337-1 break-your-wrist ultralight. Both cost me less than $500 each, the 337 was a good find at that price.

      Obligatory spam:

I'm still looking for that rare 686-4 3" full-length extractor model, anyone sees one lemme know I'll pay top dollar. Like the original 66-3 3", only 2500 of these made.

My gun is pre-MIM as well.
I just found that picture on google images to show the guy what we were talking about.
I bought mine from a gunsmith who had gone though it and bobbed the hammer.
It was his wife's purse gun until the glock 26 came out.

Hmmm, makes me wonder -- has S&W ever made a J-frame 3" hammerless?

The Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson shows that the internal hammer model 940, a 9mm J frame, was made in both 2 and 3 inch barrels (page 273). The 3 inch barrel is rare, as it was only made from 1991 to 1993. The product code of this gun is 104260.

The catalog also shows the model 640 internal hammer model was available in 3 inch barrel (page 263). This is a .38 special J frame in stainless steel. The product codes are 103794 and 103795.

Yes, there are a very few 3" Model 49s (or 38s - the Airweight version) out there, worth a few grand I believe & pictured in the Smith standard catalog book.

If you want to see how quickly your e-mail can fill up, get on the Smith forum and post "I know nothing of Smiths, through an estate I just received a 3" Model 49 ......." They're evidently quite the find.
