Ruger p94 issues?

I may pick up a P94 from someone. Is this a good pistol? What is it's value? Any issues (ammunition, FTE, extraction, mags, etc.?). I've always bought S&W, my only Ruger is my 10/22 so the pistol line is new to me.

If you do a search you will find that most of the Ruger P series pistols can be summed up as reliable, indestructible, somewhat overbuilt (heavy) and fairly accurate with a bit of a heavy trigger. As to value anywhere around $300-350 depending on condition, but I wouldn't go too much higher than that unless there were extras. Mine came with the original box and papers.

My first handgun was a stainless 9mm P94 that I have put about 750 rounds through in the last year without a single failure of any kind! As a matter of fact, this gun has NEVER had a FTE, FTF as long as I have owned it. The guide rod was a bit scratched up and when I called Ruger to order a replacement the CSR sent me a new rod and spring for free! I am not the original owner but they did not care, that to me is good customer service!

Obligatory pic, the crappy grouping was my first time at the range and me getting used to the heavy trigger. My groups have tightened up nicely. I would bet my life on this gun and do as it is my HD gun sitting in a safe next to my bed. Oh and the first suggestion is a set of Hogue replacement grips ($25) and some snap caps. Then dry fire it about 1k times to smooth out that trigger. The icing on the cake? I paid $275 with the previous owner only having put about 100 rounds though it, it looked nearly new! I have three ruger P series. a 9mm P85 and a p90 .45 and a p345. the (mm is the one i shot the most ( cheapest ammo) and I can tell you it had more than 4000 rounds through it. It NEVER gave me any problems. One itme I thought i broke something cause the gubn wouldnt disassemble easy but it ended up when my buddy put it together he put the recoil spring in backwards and it was hanging up on the slide.
other than that all the guns have performed flawlessly. Some people crap on Ruger brand but in my experience its been a great gun. Sure there are bettr guns out thre but youre gonna spend 2x the money if not more. if youre looking for a reliable gun cant go wrong with a ruger IMO

I shoot about 99% WWB and its great stuff, a bit dirty but goes bang every time!

+1. The P series are some of the most reliable semi-auto handguns you can get, and are definitely among the best values in centerfire semi-autos.

My P95 has been totally reliable through thousands of rounds of every kind of ammo I've fed it. The trigger's a bit long and was gritty before I cleaned it up, and I'm much more accurate with my CZ75B, but you can't get a better $300 centerfire semi-auto, IMO.

P series ruger's are like Tanks, big beefy and reliable, the trigger is a bit heavy.

I too have a P94 that I bought about 10 years ago...I have never had a problem with it. I have only fired my Glock and Colt Series 80 over the last couple years, but can't see getting rid of the P94 because it has been so good to me.

This is a perfect summary

I have a P89 in 9mm. This pistol is nick named "the brick", and for good reason.

I read an article that told of a test where a guy tossed a P89 off a building ( I think 5 story?) and went down, slapped in the mag and fired it off with respectable groups at the range.

I think it would be very difficult to damage mine... very.

That said, I dont think it is a good FIRST handgun. Heavy, not great accuracy, etc. But for the price... cant beat it.

I had a P-series in .40 s&w pistol to but i decided to sell it. I may be nit-picking but there just several things that bothered me so much that the pistol didn't become a keeper.
-gritty, long heavy trigger
-pain in the butt disassembly for cleaning
-relatively high bore above the grip

It's an ok pistol but for $300. I'd rather get the improved S&W Sigma ($50 rebate until the end of 2008) for probably less than that.

Youre looking at a Sigma and youre saying that the Ruger has a crappy trigger pull? have you actually fired a Sigma? That is a heavy trigger pull. LOL Ill take a Ruger over a Sigma any day

Shot my brother's P94 many times...accurate, reliable, low recoil, inexpensive.

I started with an original P85 and loved it! After it was stolen (truck broken into) it was replaced with a 94. After I got it home I discovered that it wasn't right. By that I mean the trigger and hammer interaction were inconsistant and probably dangerous! The dealer sent it back and all was fixed and it's been 100% since. I liked it so much that I bought another one for my now wife and we discovered it would fail to extract quite regularly. It went back to Ruger also and got a new extractor! It's now 100%.

My sister has an 89 and has never had an issue.

Try it out first and if its a good price, buy it!
