    Beretta 92 FS slide/rack/hammer issue

I'm new to the firearms world. I recently bought a new Beretta 92 FS. I noticed that when I bought the gun (after cleaning it and using oil to lube it) if I racked the gun while the safety was on with an empty or no clip, the slide would go forward and the hammer would stay on the cocked position. Take in mind I didn't ride the slide, I simply pulled back and let it go. After shooting it for the first time, cleaning it and oiling it, I noticed a couple of things started to happen: 1) Racking slide while empty & safety on would cause the slide to go forward completely and the hammer would go into a de-cocked position 2) Racking slide while empty & safety on would cause the slide to go forward almost completely, hammer would stay cocked and the slightest movement would cause the hammer to fall and slide to fall in place. Mind you that everything works find if you have a clip with rounds and a round in the chamber, this things only happen when the gun is empty (round/clip).

    My questions are:

    1) Is the hammer suppose to de-cock when you rack the slide while the safety is on or is it supposed to stay back?
    2) If the hammer is supposed to fall into the de-cocked position when the safety is on and the slide is racked, what is causing it to get snagged?
    3) One thing I noticed was the guide rod was sticking out at one point when the slide was getting stuck a few millimeters from its natural position. Does the guide rod suppose to stick out the gun at any given point?

The hammer on a 92FS should follow the slide forward when racked with the safety (decocker) ON. If it is staying cocked, somehow it is catching on the sear. If the gun was disassembled, sometimes the sear spring is installed wrong.

Check the dog ear is clear of debris. That's the decocker. Make sure it's not worn or messed up. Check the bulge on the safety (inside the slide) that rotates down for abnormal wear and brokenness...

Or you can just file down the dog ear and no longer have a decocker and DA first shot.

Sounds like it's not going back into battery. The hammer releases pretty much at the end. Are you riding the slide forward or just releasing it and letting it go?

I would field strip, clean and lube too.

When you have the safety on when you rack the slide, the decocking mechanism/safety has to ride over the decocking lever. It takes an effort the slide to go over it. So, there will be a hesitation just before the slide and barrel goes into battery. When the slide is fully forward with the safety on, the hammer will fall. It is normal function. If you rack the slide with safety off, it won't happen.

If you are concerned about it, and live around LA, I can take a look at it. I am Beretta armorer trained at the factory in MD. If you need a new part, I may have some laying around somewhere.

That sounds about right. I can replicate this if I ride the slide forward versus just letting it go. You're fine op..

Agreed riding the slide forward slowly will sometimes cause the slide to stop about a 1/4" or so short. Just smack the rear of the slide forward and you're good to go.
