Hi point pistols

Are they any good/for the price?
I realize I'm new here and will probably get flamed for not asking about a Sig or a Glock...but really....are they a decent piece....esp for $200

I absolutely cannot get past their looks or cumbersome build, but I have heard they are reliable. What would you be using it for? If it is a plinking/range type weapon, then I might say go ahead and give it a go. If it is for defense, I would say take that $200 and use it as a layaway towards a Glock.

i have one and i love it. had a few hickups during the first 300 rounds or so but since then it has been flawless. Flaws were mainly caused by me not racking the slide properly and letting go of it too slowly (the round getting stuck and a failuer to feed cuz it needs the momentum of the slide to chamber the round properly). Not the most accurate gun (I wouldn't suggest it if you want to do some bull's eye shooting at 50 yards like how a custom 1911 or usp match/elite will do) in the world but it goes bang and puts a 9mm in to someone every time at ~30 yards. Great fun for plinking and great value for the price (prices range from 60-180+fees, some times turners has it on sale for 160 new).

It is top heavy and feels awkwards at first but you get use to it quickly. I don't even notice it any more and the recoil is fairly light as the slide is heavy. Shoot one and see if you like it. I think you'll be pleasently suprised.

Look on youtube for videos. there has only been one I have saw which showed a jam (i've seen lot more videos of glocks jamming to be honest). You gotta remember, anything mechanical will eventually fail. When it does, Hipoint will replace the gun for free Oh yeah, I've never heard of a hipoint going kaboom on anyone (glocks do that quite a bit more often though...).

+1 maybe ok for plinking, but I would not rely on one to protect the lives of myself or my family.

I would and I do. I have a Beretta and a Hi-Point. I prefer the Hi-Point.

It is a good reliable weapon, once you get it broken in correctly.

It is as accurate as I am. I can put the whole magazine center mass at 50 yards.

You can't beat their warranty. If anything goes wrong, they will fix it. I know of one person who got ahold of a Hi-Point .45 that had been bandsawed into three pieces. Hi-Point melted the polymer frame to remove the serial number insert and cast a new frame with the same serial number and sent the guy a brand new .45, can't beat that with a stick.

Most of the people who don't like Hi-Points have never owned of fired one. A few who have owned a fired them don't like them due to the way they look, or just because they don't fit that particular individuals hand comfortably.

I personally love the way they look.

My dad's got a few that he swears by. I've shot them and they don't feel "good" like a Sig, but they work. And if you lose it or drop it or throw it at the BG when you run out of bullets you're not going to cringe. Reliable. Ugly. I've never heard a bad thing other than ugly about them from the people that really have them and shoot them a lot.

Many people here have said good things, but they are God-awful fugly. Unless it's all I could afford, I'd never own one. They look like a space toy or some piece of junk in some japanese cartoon movie. If I were you I would save my pennies and buy something a little better looking on the eyes. If you end up buying one, get a 9mm...assuming it's your first handgun.

You get what you pay for... It's like Steel Reserve or Stella.
IMHO "saturday night specials" and "shoot and throws" are a waste of natural resources. I think you will be much happier with a used quality pistol (Kimber, Sig, Hi-power, H&k,) than an new hipoint.

I personally like anything of German engineering. Save up and get something that you will appreciate.

They are an American Co with one Damn Good warrenty. I would love to buy a Hi-Point Carbine some time in the future. Doesn't the story of the ugly duckling teach us anything, it's not the looks as long as it goes bang everytime.

they work, they're reliable if you take care of them, they're ugly, they're low priced, total PITA to field strip, but decently accurate because of a fixed barrel. and the safety sucks. i have one, never had a FTF or FTE. less recoil than other comp sized 9mm due to the monolithic slab of steel that they call the slide. but you get what you pay for. if you need a gun for home defense and can't afford anything else it's fine. not great, but better than a sharp stick.

Virtually indestructible, reliable as a stone axe and imho not nearly as fugly as the High Points. I see them regularly on GB for $250-325 depending on condition. There are some people that don't like Ruger but I have had nothing but praise for my P94 and am considering a P95 for the misses.

The Army bought 5000 P95s for the Iraqis recently so you know they are tough pistols as those guys typically abuse the heck out of their weapons not to mention being in a tough environment! Yes, that's where your money is going...

A huge +1 on this.

Ruger makes a damn fine reliable and beefy auto. I would save a little bit more like Capt Jack recommends and go with Ruger. They're built like tanks and exceptionally reliable. Also made in America, but higher quality than Hi-point.

Mind sharing why you would not rely your lives on it? What kind of failures did you had? Besides being fugly there should be some logical and reasonable explanation behind your posts. I just got one, of course that is an added collection to my other FAs and I have not shoot it yet. If you can please share your experiences so I would know what to expect besides being reliable and acccurate as some owners pointed out.

They are heavy, feel rather klutzy, and are ugly. They work well and are a great value at the price. I have owned a .40, 9mm, .380, and a couple of the carbines. I've kept the 9mm as it's completely dependable and so cheap I'll never worry about wear or damage to it. The carbines are just a lot of fun to shoot.

While no Hi-Points are on my CCW and I never carry them, I'd not hesitate to use one to defend my life. For a HD / trunk / truck / etc... gun they are a great choice.
