Im currently in my ten day waiting period for a Glock 17 Gen 2 which I purchased as new in box, never fired. This is my first handgun and I wanted to ask the experts if there is anything I should know or do before firing the first round through it considering it's just been sitting for probably 20 years.

if it's been sitting in a box, i wouldn't worry much about it. always check for obstructions in the bore though, for any gun. oil contact areas and use hearing/eye protection and have fun. -
Field strip, clean and lubricate, assemble back, have fun.https://jpfo.org/articles-assd03/jew-without-gun.htm

Great gun. I would do a normal cleaning and basic lube.
Seriously the Gen 2 is really nice. Love the grip. My daughter hogs my Gen 2.
Bought mine in 1993.
May the Bridges I burn light the way.

Glock factory maintenance .pdf:
I wouldn't bother disassembling the slide. As long as you can hear the striker move back and forth when it is shaken and un-cocked, it should be good to go.
Just check the barrel, and lube per fig. #14, leaving the factory copper grease in place.Last edited by Joshua Tree; 10-29-2015, 5:05 PM.Comment

Take it apart and polish the trigger bar and connector where they meet.
You will thank me for as soon as you take it apart and look at how the parts are stamped.
You really should do this with any striker fired pistol sans some customs that have already been massaged.
My Sig 1911 was cutting horizontal grooves in my trigger bar from a sharp disconnector. And everyone of my friends striker fired pistols all exhibit the same type of wear. Once you get rid of the sharp and jagged parts, the trigger becomes a pleasure to operate.
BTW, In before the next guy says BS to what I told you.
My only response; Take it apart. If you see nothing wrong, nothing was lost. If you see what I believe you will, you've saved yourself some grief.
I have a 2 pin Gen 3 with compensated barrel. I wish someone knowledgeable would've told me to do what I have described, but they didn't. In fact, the guys on glock talk and their armorers were a complete waist of time. They had zero answers to the issues I had. I had to learn everything on my own.
BTW, someone on this very site asked the same thing you did, but for his Sig. After doing what I told him to do, he came back to his thread to thank me for it. His was just starting to get chewed up.Last edited by nedro; 10-29-2015, 5:07 PM.Comment
