So I'm not the only one that thinks of this as a possibility

If it is a handgun, only if you have a receipt that indicates purchase within the last 30 days.

Federally, every handgun must HAVE a lock when it leaves the FFL.
California, you need either a lock purchased within the last 30 days, or fill out a safe affidavit.
With the safe affidavit and the Turner's lock, you are covered, but some FFLs still make you buy the lock.

Smart move taking the locking case with you.
The trigger lock serves no legal purpose the moment your 2nd foot hits the sidewalk. Likewise, that lock and the case the gun came in does not satisfy "secure locked container" for the trip from the door to your trunk unless you have a cable lock and are able to wrap the handle of the case in such a way so as to prevent access.

No go for the S&W Shield... it ships in a cheesy cardboard box.
