Holsters at the range

Do most shooting ranges allow you to carry your pistol in a holster, say you are going to the restroom and don't wanna leave your gun on the firing lane?

Or is it pretty much for LEOs only?

Those indoor range I have been to don't allow holster. I never understand, maybe they are nerves of people with gun?
I, in other hand worry my $500~$1k pistol end up in someone else range bag. For I usually shoot alone.

Nope, I haven't seen any range allow this unless it's a competitive venue (i.e. USPSA, IDPA, 3Gun). Even then, when you approach the public line, they want you to remove it.

At the range I work the policy is no carrying unless you're LEO or have a CCW.

my best recommendation would be to case and lock the gun, and if still worried about it, lock the case to a bench, or return the gun to your vehicle while your away. or put a ad up on calguns and make a friend, and shoot with them and take turns watching stuff. the buddy system works. if you communicate well then if you had an accident and couldnt talk then medical personnel would have your buddy there able to tell them what allergies or other conditions you had.


or shoot at a range where you dont need to worry about such things.

at slosa ( in san luis obispo)we have cease fire every 20 minutes and you have the option of leaving it on the bench unloaded, mag out and action open. no one may approach the benches during a cease fire. cease fires last a few minutes( sometimes, depending on how far out people are placing targets it can last 15 minutes) and thats an exellent time to visit the restroom because the rso is watching and making sure that no firearms are touched until cease fire and target set up is finished.

most ranges don't even want you shooting from the draw, allow no holster at all.

Too bad....makes no sense to get one unless I am attending a defensive shooting course. If I go hunting, that'll be a different story

every indoor range i have been to doesnt allow holstering unless you are leo/ccw. with some of the idiots and "homeboys" out there i think this is a good idea. How many times have you seen the Pancho Villa or Timothy McVeigh types in the lanes shooting everything but the target, flagging everyone nearby and putting the target 4 feet from the booth? I think the no holstering rule keeps these people from shooting their own feet but more importantly it keeps them from shoooting me.

if you are serious about practicing holster work start doing some IDPA or Steel Challenge matches.....hell even SASS

The indoor range I go to is also a store and I have been going there for 15+ years. They do not allow holsters unless however you are a close friend or like myself a trust and life long member. I carry from the time I walk in the door until I walk out with no questions. But the policy is no for the average Joe. There was only one issue with this where a guy questioned the clerk about me carrying in the store and range. And my buddy who I have known for 20 years and is an employee. Says oh he works here part time. (that has never been the case, but kept them off the hook.

The other range I shoot at it 800 acres of Private propety and is used for open range cattle. The owner has real cowboys there tending the cattle all the time and they wear there six shooters, all but maybe one. So I have never been questioned carrying there either.

If you want to learn to shoot from a holster, look into competitive shooting.
Any action-type pistol match is going to start from a holster.

The reason why is that range officers cannot pinpoint shooters that are trained in holstering their weapon. It prevents newb Joe Schmoe from drawing and causing an accident.

The outdoor range I go to definitely does not allow holsters. Had a friend with land I used to shoot on. Bought some holsters to use there. He has since sold the land so they now all sit.
