    Question about the roster...

Does modifying a gun on the roster automatically drop it off the roster? For example, let's say that I want to purchase a Glock 17 Gen 3 on Gunbroker, but with a stippled grip and Trijicon night sights. Would these modifications make it ineligible to be shipped here in CA?

The roster only applies to Brand New Handguns that are submitted by the manufactures for safety testing. Once an on roster handgun is sold, you can modify it to your liking with of course some restrictions.

You can't convert to full auto.

Sadly, yes in this case. Changing the sights changes the gun away from the as-tested approved version.

That seems not to matter if you buy the gun new, on-roster and then mod; Roster does not apply to ownership or use. Nor would it be a problem to buy PPT from another CA resident: Roster does not apply there.

But Gunbroker suggests interstate, and in interstate transactions, the Roster does apply.

Frozen in 2015, it is falling out of date and I can no longer edit the content. But much of it is still good!

For reason I thought sight modifications are allowed. Stipling is def not though for interstate

OP, you should be able to collect on an auction with the example given, because the base model is still on roster, and not an "assault weapon". Chances are after all the associated fees, it'll cost you more than if you just bought the sights and installed them or even had them installed (lots of dealers will install free if you buy the sights from them). Grip stippling could possibly be done local. See what a local smith would charge, and what the sights would cost you. Ask your dealer what all the fees would come out to, and see what's cheaper.

It says on the roster homepage that all models currently approved are acceptable with or without night sights.

So if it's a roster gun with factory night sights it should be good to go. Although I'd guess 99% have a different model # for night sights, which would throw them back off roster because the roster goes strictly by model number.

A good number of those night sight models are actually on there, so it's not like you can't get a gun with factory night sights.

Grip stipling on a polymer frame or plastic grips would've had to be done by the dealer prior to sale, but they won't bother with that because it'll jack up the sticker price and make it less desirable/valueable to the average person. No?

Once you own the gun though, it's legal to do whatever you want with it so long as it doesn't become an "assault weapon"... some dealers may also install sights, stiple, or do other work during the 10 day wait. So it may be possible to get 2 birds stoned at once.

Thanks for the responses. What about for other, more extensive mods? Like, buying a Glock with the slide milled for an RMR or the trigger replaced with a Zev aftermarket kit? If I was to purchase from a private citizen outside of state over Gunbroker and have it shipped to my FFL, would my FFL still be able to transfer the pistol to me?

Those 2 are Roster-exiting mods. Unless you yourself are exempt from the Roster, no-go.
