When did the state start poking?

When did California start keeping records of gun sales to individuals? I ask because of the two oldest guns I have where I am the original owner (purchased in 1992), I don't have any records (paperwork) that the state has them registered. I'm good regarding record keeping and all I have for these two pistols are the invoices from the retailer.

They don't need to be registered, however I believe pistol registration in CA through FFL purchases (DROS) began in 1924. PPT's required FFL by law on January 1, 1991, and long gun registration began January 1, 2014.
New residents were required to register pistols (but not long guns) beginning January 1, 1998, while long gun registration began on January 1, 2014.
