Labelling Ammo Cans

Since the Great Ammo Drought of 2013 I have been steadily stocking my bunker, I mean basement, with a my full range of calibers. I will be much better prepared next time. Most of it I have stored in 50 Cal steel ammo boxes, some in 30 Cal cans. I intend to keep picking up a case here and there when the prices are good until the next shortage hits.

My problem is that I am having trouble locating the ammo I want when I want to go shooting. I have been sticking Post-Its on some of the ammo cans temporarily, but obviously this is not a good long term solution. This is what I consider a luxury problem, and is a whole lot better than spending time looking for ammo to over-spend on like I was a couple year ago. Still the situation could be better.

I expect this is a problem many other have faced, so I am looking for suggestions on how to label them and how to attach the labels. I am hoping someone makes plastic bags or envelopes the right size, and I can either put a hand labeled card inside or tear the end off a box of ammo. Maybe something intended for stamp collecters? Anyone have a link to something on Amazon I can buy a zillion of? What do you guys do?

I use Avery Shipping Tags with the metal wire tie. They're large enough where you can easily write brand/model/caliber/quantity and update as you add or remove.

Im ghetto, print the caliber in large format font. Then cut out, use clear packing tape. Place on top, and sides of ammo can. Done deal. Cheap easy peasy. Cost? Free if you have some clear packing tape.

I paint the top of the cans different colors for the ammo I have put up. It's a bit more time consuming, but easier to find exactly which one I'm looking for.

Write it on masking tape with a sharpie. Easy to remove later.

There is a member here that sells ammo can magnetic labels, not very expensive. Looks pretty nice and organized labeled this way. They work ok for me.

Don't forget to buy the Zcorr .50 cal Ammo can bags to keep out the moisture. A must for long time storage.

I store my ammo the same way. I just mark the front of the ammo can with a marker.

I am cheap.

Masking tape and a black sharpie.

Caliber and date them so I can use oldest first.

Much of my purchases came in Ammo cans so the masking tape can be removed if I need to use can for another caliber.

Trouble I just got to remember where they all are stored.

I have used stick-um labels and in time, the glue dries and the labels fall off. I expect the same happened with masking tape.

The most permanent solution has been to spray the front of the can with white paint and let dry. Then write on the flapper handle the load, and below the flapper handle, the caliber. When can is empty, spray paint over the magic marker. I have found the occasional military ammo can where a Soldier spray painted or painted on information.

I also stick heavy paper between the lid, paper long enough to cover the flapper handle. The paper stock is the stuff used for business cards. I also use paper from NRA small bore or Highpower paper targets. Bullseye pistol target paper is too thin and tears too easily. I write the caliber and load on the paper. The paper does get torn but it works.

I have a Dymo label maker and mark each of my cans with the cliber and whether the ammo is lead-free or not. We can't use lead ammo for hunting in Kalifornia, The Peoples Democratic Republic of.

Degrease area of ammo can with denatured alcohol. Place strip of masking tape and write CALIBER, grain of bullet, manufacturer/headstamp, date. Or you can just write directly to can with a sharpie then put clear tape over it. Once can is empty clean it with alcohol or WD-40.
