Couple of my good buddies have this for duty, but some department does not let their members carry any type of competition style models for duty carry.

Also a great gun. I have one in my safe that I bought about 20-25 years ago. Very heavy for a single stack .45 though.

The HK45 is bigger than the HK USP 45 the USP also has a 12rd mag and the HK45 is only 10

The USP can also be fitted with match trigger parts.

My sidearm is a HK USP 45 Tactical and love it.

My 2nd choice would be an H&K USP45. The USB is DA/SA but can be carried cocked & locked like a 1911. It's light and ergonomically correct and is very reliable. The downsides are the proprietary accessory rail and the cost of spare magazines.

My 3rd choice would be a Sig 220 SAO (Single Action Only). Reliable, with a consistent 5lb trigger pull and outstanding ergonomics, its only downsides are weight and 8rd magazine capacity.
I was going to start typing until I saw my thoughts basically had already been posted. I've always used one of my 1911's cocked and locked for bedside gun (you mentioned for carry or HD), none of my 1911's has ever given me any issues. That being said, my current bedside gun is S&W M&P45. I really like the S&W M&P line- bought a Shield 9mm and Full Size 9mm last year and they both have been great, even with their stock triggers. I PPT'd a S&W M&P45 and the trigger needed the APEX kit- for some reason trigger was bit spongier than my M&P9 out of the box. Also for carry, it's quite a bit lighter than most 1911's and 2 extra rounds.

I have trained with both 1911's and striker fired over the years so not a big switch for me. I really like my S&W M&P45 and has given me zero issues since I bought it. I use Speer Gold Dot 230 gr JHPs.

For carry, although that is not an option for me, but if I could, hands down it would be either my HKUSP45c or HKUSP9c. Extremely reliable, shoots straight, and perfect size for a carry gun to me- small enough to easily carry all day but still feels basically like a full size gun when shooting it.

Even though most of my handguns are 1911's, I love the HKUSP compacts, they're built like tanks and can either go cocked and locked (with V1 version) or DA/SA. I find the SA pull to be very good on them after a thousand rds or so to break it in.

                              Why not a Tanfoglio?

Of mentioned, g21 gen4. For duty it makes a lot of sense.
