    1911 gun smithing

    Hey guys,
So I'm looking to do some modifications to my Kimber Pro Carry II stainless including a rounded bobtail and refinishing. Do you guys know of some experienced 1911 smiths who could perform this for me? Im in the Central Valley and would like to do it somewhere where it isn't too far of a drive but if necessary i can ship if its to a highly experienced smith who can get the job done right. Also to you guys who have done this mod before, how much can one expect to pay for a quality job? I'm leaning towards the rounded like the Kimber Master carry in the pic posted below. Thanks in advance.

Alan Tanaka is great, I have a gun that he worked on, Scott or Randy at Apex Tactical do fantastic work. I'm unaware of anyone who does the kimber style round bob, as far as I know there isn't a jig for it yet.

        Genecco Gunworks in Stockton.

He's worked on my 1911's for years. Does fantastic work. Comes with a price though. His wait times are long too, but worth it.

Thanks for the replys so far guys. So I'm assuming Alan and Jim are more then capable of doing a bobtail job? As far as the rounded goes if its not something most smiths are doing i wouldn't have a problem of doing the regular bobtail.

What did you have genecco do to your 1911?

Alan is certainly capable of it. Jim is an excellent smith, but you may want to do some research.

              OP,

On my 1911's ....trigger jobs, cut and reweld the ramp on the barrels, ambi safeties, install compensators (race guns), reliability duty job.

On my friends 1911's....build the entire thing (race gun), re install comps due to questionable work by another smith, checkering front strap, re-work an entire Colt Gold Cup for accuracy and reliability & etc.

He is truly one of the best. I believe he is a warranty station for some of the high end European shotgun manufacturers.

Talked to him on the phone today super nice guy and seemed very knowledgable. He said he was only about 3 months out on the type of work I wanted to get done too.

any Gun Smith in the So Cal area?
What would one expect to pay for Ambi safety and trigger?
I had bought a Mitchell 1911 Gold 10-12 years ago and they
installed a Ambi and went through the gun for cheap many years ago
                    NEVER had a problem with.

Bad picture, but I had a local guy bob my Pro CDP II. I went with the Ed Brown profile. Very happy with the results. Frame was re-finished as well.

I left everything else alone. I know people like to hate on Kimbers but I have well over 5k on this one and it's been perfect. The 'Smith used Duracoat, and it's held up fine. I've been very happy with the results overall. The gun prints MUCH less, and is easier to carry. Some people think the bobbed tails shoot different, it didn't bother me, and I shoot it the same. If you are in the central valley, and this way your welcome to run a few through it.
