You can get a new G17 for close to that price. It's $400 once a year from GSSF. PLus, of course, tax and transfer fees, but you get a new gun. And being a GSSF member, you get a lifetime warranty (or lifetime of your membership ) on all the Glocks you own, no matter how you came to acquire them(provided you did so legally ). Life membership is $350.

I don't currently own either one of these, but I've shot both (although I shot Beretta M9 more than 92fs).

Accuracy - both are ok. I like the way G17 handles more than the Beretta, and so it works out better for me. However, the Beretta is heavier, thus absorbing more of the recoil.
The price is about the same. I've seen used G17s and 92fs on the forum here at around $425-450.
Handling - as I mentioned, I like the feel of G17 better, especially if it's 3rd gen.
I don't see any difference between them for home protection. Whch ever one you'll end up being more comfortable with will work.

Field-stripping and cleaning the Glocks, to me, is easier than Beretta 92fs (well, M9, I didn't really do much cleaning of the 92fs). Both M9 and 92fs FTEd on me on occasion, and M9 also had FTFs. None of he Glocks I own or shot had such issues.

So, my vote is for G17.

Personally, I'd add $100 or so and go with a used G34 or G35, but that's me. They'd be $480 plus fees and tax from GSSF.

Neither, get a CZ-75 variant used in more governments, police forces and militaries than any other handgun

Most full size modern guns can out shoot most of their users, so throw accuracy out.

Glock can be had for cheaper.

Handling? - You tell me - what feels better in your hand?

Find me a Glock that doesn't go bang everytime, does that answer your HD question? Also keep in mind the Glock has a rail for lights, lasers, sex toys, what ever. I leave the junk off mine though, a pair of night sights is all I require for an HD handgun.

We are all biased here due to our psychical features (size of our hands for example), level of training, what we were brought up with, and advertisements. All the data to buy a handgun is out there, you just have to find one that fits YOU.

Accuracy: with those quality handgun accuracy is all depend on how you use the trigger. So if you like the Glock safe action trigger, it will be more accurate in your hand. But Beretta do have the outstanding SA trigger.

price: Glock is a bit cheaper. And I would buy new glock for the price different is under $100. I got my G22 for $550 out of door, and new 92 cost about 5 to 600 before tax. (check out cdnn, they have a very good deal on 92 last time I check).

Handling: I like Glock much more so than Beretta. Lighter, smaller, more after market parts if you in to that.

Home Protection: If you are new with firearm and thinking to pick up first handgun for home defense, I'll recommend Glock. Point and shoot, no safety to worry about. But if you are all school and like safety on gun, go with Beretta.

over all best: You never gonna get a straight answer like that.

I would like to add, Beretta 92/m9 is alloy frame, heavier than Glock's polymer frame, so in theory it adsorbs more recoil than Glock. But Glock has lower bore axis, the recoil go straight toward your shoulder instead of upward, means less muzzle flip. I personally love that and wish more handgun can build like that(Glock, CZ, Steyr are the only few I can think of it).

CZ 75 is the best kept secret in gun world. If they make their slide just a tap bigger I would actually rank it higher than my Glock.

                      toss up

i have shot both, like both and shot both in competition, and for production class USPSA, i like the beretta. heavier = less felt recoil = quicker follow up shots. i like the speed of reload with the glock. but the beretta grips are more comfortable for me. but for cleaning, the glock is the simplest thing ever. sooo.... yeah toss up

Ironically Glockman19 doesn't have a glock 17. I bought a Beretta 92FS INOX. Why? Because I have a Glock 19 7 26 and the Beretta is a beautiful gun. Although I prefer the glock and will be getting one soon.

                        Accuracy Glock
                        price Glock
                        Handling Glock
                        Home Protection Glock
over all best? IMHO the glock 9mm firearms are the best made 9mm available. They are reliable, accurate and practically indestructible.

The only catagory I'll give the Beretta is it's a beautiful gun, much better looking than the Glock.

                        If you can buy both.

It's going to be a toss up with both. I used to have a INOX 92FS that I sold. I have a G17 that I never shoot since I usually shoot my G34 instead.

Accuracy: It's a toss up. Both are very accurate. I prefer a lightened trigger of the Glock over the Beretta. The 92FS has a grittier SA trigger and the DA is very long. D-spring helps on a Beretta but the trigger is one of it's negatives. Short slack, short reset, Glock goodness. The fact that I can't swap out the front sight is also a ding towards the 92FS. I can swap out the Glock's sights for something nice.

Price: Very similiar, but edge goes towards Glock. Lightly used they're around $400 - $450 easily. Just takes some looking.

Handling: I like the way the Beretta feels and handles. The grip isn't super large like most make it out to be. It doesn't "point high" which is a constant complaint of the Glock pistols. But I have no problems with either. The lower bore axis is a huge plus however, going in favor of the Glock

Home Protection: Subjective. I personally don't feel comfortable with a loaded Glock without a holster. And, I don't like holsters for HD pistols. Main reason is my Glocks have lightened triggers, for this application isn't feasible. However, Glock have rails already on them, so you can mount a weaponlight on it. The triggerguard isn't so far forward so it's easy to activate.

I'm going to add one more section, ease of maintenance. Both will be reliable. Glocks are easier to field strip and MUCH easier to detail strip. Both are relatively low maintenance, my 92FS didn't need to be run wet. The Beretta action is much smoother, racking it seems like it's on ball bearings. Also, the recoil impulse is smoother on the Beretta as well.

The "safety" goes in the wrong direction. Dumb slide mounted safety/decocker.

                            Anyways fwiw, my $0.02.

                              buy both?

                              if i had a choice...M9A1 and G19

the berretta looks much better...got the rails for lights/laser

the glock is much easier to use/clean...

                              i wouldn't be able to pick either...ahahaha

                              but full-size i'd go with the M9A1.
