Colt Gold Cup. Update: shot it today see post #18

I traded one of my Smith and Wessons today for this 1974 vintage Series 70 Gold Cup. While I just hate getting rid of any of my babies, I wanted to get a GC to replace the one I foolishly sold many years ago. I would rate this one at around 97%++ with only a small bit of bluing wear on the front of the slide and a weird sort of discoloration on the left side of the slide near the roll mark. Just enough wear to make me not worry about shooting it.

Since I am a little cash poor right now, the only way I could swing this deal was to trade off a pinned and recessed N frame in it's presentation case that was just too nice (unfired) to shoot.

Anyway, I am as happy as can be and am going out to the desert tomorrow and see just how this thing shoots.

It is very hard to get good pictures of this thing because it is just so darn shiny. I had to tweak the camera settings to try and eliminate the glare so the finish looks sort of washed out. In reality, it is a deep blue.

I too foolishly got rid of mine in the late 70s. I got it from a friend of my ex brother in law who was moving to NY. I paid $100 for it and figured I did alright doubling my money 6 months later (insert butt kicking emoticon here).

Very nice! I have it's cousin, s/n 70N13xxx, probably my most accurate and fun to shoot pistol. I've never shot full power loads through mine, just mid-range swc that I loaded up for it. Someone told me it was a good idea to run a heavier recoil spring for full power ammo, but I never confirmed that. Have fun with yours.

I would not feel bad at all!! You traded a gun you will maybe never shoot for an all time clasic that you will shoot. My step dad has a gold cup that I remember my mom bringing home to him as a gift when I was about 12, Im 49 now and recently asked to see it to take shooting.

He was a competitive shooter for years back in the 90.s He Bubbad up this gun so bad I almost puked. I probably needs 1k in smith work but may never be the same. I would LOVE to have a GC like that , good choice OP!!!

They are nice - I have 2. One has been heavily modified and is a shooter. The other is NIB.

Mine is from the mid 60's, just says National Match on the slide.

LNIB when I bought it last year.

Has a King grip safety on it, but I have the original.

Make sure the base pin on the rear sight stays in place.

                    Nice.

Remember to change out all springsbefore shooting, it's a cheap thing to do and lets you at the same time check the pistol.

I bought mine from Siegle's (Oakland) back in 1976 for what was then the princely sum of $303.47, out the door. People excoriated me for spending that much on a gun, but I was happy and as the years went by I got even happier with this pistol.

Then in the late 90's the cash offers started being made. I "retired" it in 2000, now shooting a Les Baer TRS on a regular basis instead. Once in awhile I'll take the Gold Cup out for a session and it is still a charm to shoot.

It always puzzled me why the GC hasn't appreciated in value like the Python has. IIRC they were both around $300 when I bought my GC in the '70's. Maybe because the Python was discontinued?
