Hey calguns I ask you is Cerakoting a new colt 1911 heresy? I recently picked up a 1070xse and am not a big fan of the matte/brushed finish. I have always wanted a two-tone combat elite and was thinking about transforming my gun. If I beadblast the frame and kote the slide black am I diminishing the value of the gun someday? I figured it's not a collector item so who cares?

Is Cerakoting a new Colt heresy ?

No, it makes sense. Kind of like spray painting graffiti on the Mona Lisa. It's your Shti so have at it. Taste is an individual thing, like a couch and frig on the porch....it makes a certain statement.I love America for the rights and freedoms we used to have. -
Cerakote away
What you have is not a collector's item there is nothing special about the XSE.
Now if you want to cerakote a python then be prepared to be stoned to deathComment

I got ripped apart here talking about getting Cerakote on a old and trashed S&W revolver I got. Do what you want and how it makes you happy. I have two Glocks done in Cerakote and I think they're both awesome now. Its nice to have some variety and a bit of the unique.RIP Edrik M Alford 1966-2014.
I love you and miss you pop.
I'll meet you on the range in heaven, keep a bench open for me.

Before you Cerakote, I would suggest the following:
1. Decide if you want any changes made, like front strap checkering or different sight cuts. Get those done before you refinish.
2. Shoot it, beat it to siht, so at least you aren't wasting a "good" finish. Send it off after it's one ugly sonno***** so Cerakoting it will feel better.

Really good advice . . . ThanksComment

Cerakote it. It's yours to do as you wish with it..
In general, it will decrease the resale value of the firearm. If you are planning to sell it eventually, don't expect to get a lot for it unless you can find someone with similar tastes as yourself.
So to answer your question of "will it diminish the value"... The short answer is "yes". The long answer is no IF you can find someone that wants that specific gun WITH that specific coating...which would be a very small "niche" market.Comment

Orthodox = If it ain't a colt it's a copy, MIM is the devil.
Reformed = Front cocking serrations, rails, "tactical"
Charismatic = Throw an RMR on that 2011.Last edited by Rhyyke; 09-09-2015, 11:13 AM.Comment
