reliability comparison between these two Springfield 1911s

long story short, I'm very picky...

i wanted the TRP with the half rail, but apparently its the ONLY TRP off roster.

yes, I am aware i could get a full rail or no rail at all, but thats not what i want

i want a half rail

whats very important to me with any firearm is reliability...

i know most 1911s will take some tweaking/tinkering/breaking in before and may not be considered "extremely reliable", but i am talking about relative reliability for a 1911

SO MY QUESTION IS...is there any real reliability differences between the Springfield TRP and the Springfield Operator (which is a 'Loaded' model)?

I've heard that the TRP has a bit of a tighter fit and maybe a better trigger..

not sure whether or not these differences matter much for reliability or not..

again, I'm vaguely aware of the differences between these 1911s, I'm more interested if those differences result in a difference in reliability..

(by reliability i mean round count before failures, occurrences of malfunctions, materials they're composed of, differences in MIM parts used, etc.)

Use quality ammo and good magazines and reliability should be about the same with both models.

You know, to truly find out which is more reliable, you're going to have to buy both and test them extensively

I would start by searching youtube for videos of testing/reviews for both models.
From there, search google and bing for testing/reviews of both models.
After that, search the forums for discussion data that you can use to choose one or the other.
Also, SA has a online custom shop page that offer quite a few services for 1911 platforms if you decide to enhance your pistol.

I can't specifically answer your question but can relate that i've had the best luck with Springfield Armory. The pistols run beautifully. I have several and have been very pleased, so much so that two of my close friends purchased SA 1911s after trying mine.

Springfield Armory has an excellent reputation for customer service, Dave Williams who runs their custom shop is amazing.

I would probably opt for the TRP as they offer some nice options standard.

You really want it.

Check if Springfield's custom shop will cut the dust cover and re-mill (or keep it slab for a little uniqueness) the slide. That should keeps the lifetime warranty.

If not, I am sure a custom gun smith will.

Me neither I've never owned a TRP half rail or the Loaded Operator but I have lusted both. Neither had everything I wanted though so I splurged and got the Pro. Really like shooting the TRP, super solid and I've never had an issue.

Half rails show up all of the time for PPT - they are probably one of the most common off-roster guns around. I have both a TRP and a Loaded - get the TRP. It's generally considered to be the best production 1911 available. You would need to step up to a semi-custom (SA Pro, Wilson, Ed Brown, Les Baer, Nighthawk, etc) to do better - and by "better", I mean build quality and finish and slightly better accuracy for the most part; reliability would probably be equal.

I bought a SA TRP Operator half rail late last year. When make it to the range I've been shooting my SW1911 (first handgun ever purchased) when I bring out the 1911- even though I own brand new TRP half rail and brand new Wilson Combat CQB.

Main reason for this is I do not have the time these days to get to range much and the SW1911 is my bedside gun so when I do get to practice, I bring that- and have taken many classes with it over the years.

The SA TRP half rail- all I have done is lube it up at home and load and unload some snap caps and practice dry firing. The thing does truly feel like a tank and I'm sure once I finally get it out shooting it will be a blast- one thing though, the rail is much stiffer, more difficult to rack than my SW1911, just an observation, but I am sure she'll run perfectly just as my SW1911 has from day 1 straight out of the box with zero malfunctions of any type.

That's funny as I find most 1911s to be extremely reliable right out of the box. I base this mostly on the 15 to 20 I have owned over the years, Wilson, Brown, Kimber, S.A., Colt, Remington and others. Not to mention the 50+ other 1911s I have spent time with( duty guns, friends, loaners, etc) I did have one that was a lemon and another that needed a little work to run HP, but that small percentage is far from MOST 1911s.
