I would buy the XD because I don't like the way the Shield feels. You should prob get the Shield.

Totally different feel, size and weight between those two guns.

I don't like the feel of the shield but if it was for concealed carry I choose it over the xd9. If it wasn't for concealed carry then I'd get the XD9 and preferably the 5" Tactical.

        For conceal carry, shield...
For range and HD purpose, XD probably.

Apples and oranges. Which means you need both.

You can also add one round to your shield mag capacity with mag guts:

if you mean XDS in 9, then you have a good discussion. grip is nice on the shield compared to the XDS. I have both, hard to tell because my XDS is a 45 and my shield is a 9mm. I like them both! trigger on the shield like all Smith and Wesson is horrendous!

As the others have said, two totally different pistols. I have owned both, and still own the XD9. I wasn't comfortable enough with the shield to keep it for CCW but that just may be my experience alone. The XD is a great all purpose handgun that probably excels at nothing in particular but can be used for everything. I have bought and sold quite a few pistols but my XD will never be sold.

How about you shoot both of them and decide which one you're more comfortable shooting with, concealment and ergo is just a plus. I have a shield, I'm selling it right now because although it FEELS great in my hand and conceals very well on me, I'm just not comfortable shooting it in a life or death situation. The shield trigger isn't for me nor is any of the M&P.
