    Fast reload techniques?

    Hey guy,

I'm going to be competing in a shooting comp soon and I wanted to start practicing my speed reloads. What sort of exercises would you recommend?

    Watch this guy:

Note: Minimal movement, but the gun is still brought back and tilted slightly, and he looks the next mag into the magwell. The gun doesn't drop much, though, and he's on target again in no time. That's probably the most important part of the reload--getting the sights back up and on target quickly. Smooth is fast.

You can practice reloads in your garage. I've seen a guy set a cardboard box on a stool in front of him to catch his fallen mags. He just reloads and reloads from his game belt. Pretty simple, really. Just remember to start and end with sights on target.

ETA: Found the link to the thread/vid of the guy's garage dryfire & reload routine: http://www.brianenos.com/forums/inde...yfire+practice

Practice slowly and get the basic movement down. The key to a fast reload is a smooth motion completing the task. Do not develop any type of quirks or fancy movement causing you to waste time. Travis Tomasie ranks as a Grandmaster in USPSA, which did not happen overnight. Practice, practice and practice.

If it's slow at work, get a Staples staple box 1/4" 6.35mm 5000 staples version. It'll mimic a magazine and practice the movement of inserting into your imaginary open magwell.

It sure beats indexing with nothing in your hand. Oh yeah, taken from Initial D, have a half filled bottle of water and walk around your office without disturbing the water from swaying back and forth. As smoothly as possible.

watch tv or movies and go through the motions. Use snap caps and bring the gun up and pull the trigger on a target in the tv. This gives you a new target every time.

If anyone walks in, you look a bit weird constantly getting all Vincent from Collateral on your TV, but it helps.

What kind of belt would you guys recommend for my gun and mag holders? If it matters, I'm shooting a USP .45F in a Blackhawk Serpa holster.

                CR speed should do fine.

What kind of match are you shooting? I assume you will be shooting in production in IPSC or SSP in IDPA?

Get a Blade tec holster and their mag pouches. If it's different match I don't know what their rules are. The Black hawk might slow you down some.

Any strong leather belt would work.
I move slow but I make up for it by shooting poorly.

I don't know what the match is called exactly. They do it the 2nd saturday of every month at the Rainbow Range near Temecula CA. I've got a membership there so I thought of trying it out.

When I was watching them shoot last time, they had two guys side by side. In front of them were, from left to right, a circular steel plate, a smaller square one, a man sized steel target, another man sized target, another square one, and finally a circular one.

When the buzzer went off, the shooters had to take down the circle and the square, then do a quick reload and take down the man sized target. First person to knock down all three wins.

                    It looked really fun.

Sounds kinda like Bianchi Cup stuff. We do mano-a-mano shoots like that at our Burro shoots.

+1000 on the CR Speed. Inner and outer velcro belt, very stiff. You run the inner belt through your pant belt loops, attach the holster & mag pouches on the outer belt, then slap it onto the first belt. No need to attach/remove holster and pouches every time you gear up. Definitely the way to go for a game gun belt.

Also, if the BH Serpa holster is the one w/ the lock, I'd look for another holster. Not that it wouldn't work, but it's just one more thing to do (like clicking off a thumb safety). I use a Bladetech SRB dropped & offset holster for my Glock 17--just draw and fire. Comp-tac is also highly recommended. Both are quality kydex (and it needs to be kydex, IMHO, for safer and faster draws and re-holstering).

main thing is to practice seriously. something about 100 proper/perfect executions of a manuever to make it go into memory. Start slowly and build up from there. And also safe. Don't go loading live rounds Boo....

I use CR Speed. For my IPSC and IDPA. I also frequent Rainbow match, just for fun, nothing serious. Come by and say hi next SAT.

If you just want to start with Rainbow match, all you need is a safe holster for your gun, you don't even need a "match belt" or mag holster yet(altho they would be useful).

The Rainbow match is a basic fun steel match, 6 targets per stage, 5 stages total, no make up shots, 5 second penalty for each miss. You can shoot just about anything (safe) that you want to there. They also have rifle and shotgun stages.
