    .44 auto mag-anyone?

Was watching Beverly Hills Cop II and .44 auto mag was a small part of the plot line. A few Google searches later and a few minutes of reading on Wikipedia and it sounded interesting.
Short lived run from 1971 to 1973
Seems it wasn't a well run company. 3000 units made.
One right now on Gunbroker at $4200.00

So along comes IMI with the Desert Eagle in 1979.
I'm guessing their success kept anyone else from pursuing a larger magnum semi auto gun.

Anyone out there with any experience with the original .44 Auto Mag??

It was first featured in 'Sudden Impact" as Dirty Harry's replacement for the model 29. The Automag was only about as powerful as .44 mag combat loads, not full hunting loads.

While I have not fired an Automag, my cousin has a Wildey in .45 Winchester Mag. It is based on the Automag, but with an adjustable gas block. More powerful than the .44 Automag also. Great gun!

I think about 10000 were made by the various companies that made them. Finicky guns, and getting expensive and mags and parts are $$$. Wildeys are also hard to find and expensive. I think part of the "Deagles" success is they take normal 44mag cartridge not 44AMP.

Which presents it's own set of problems as getting a semiauto pistol to run with rimmed revolver cartridges can be hard. Plus you have to have bullet shapes and power levels that won't choke the gun and will cycle the gun.

I have had two. The first one was one of the first 1000 Pasadena guns. I bought it new from Harry Sanford for $220. It was impressive to shoot and functioned well. It was sold many years ago for a nice profit.
I also had one of the nine factory engraved ones. I paid $650 for it, never shot it and sold it a few years later for a huge profit.
I still have some misc. brass, an empty ammo box, and a broken mag.

My father-in-law has one with a .357 conversion. I don't think he's ever fired it because he just liked to buy guns and make them safe queens. I'm not sure of its date of production.

Judging by all of the professionally lit, studio quality photo shoots of guns with zero wear on this site, I think there is a lot of that around here.

These were at a gun shop in N.C.
Up on the wall. As far as I know they are still there. Biggest small shop filled with desirable firearms I have ever seen.

For folks truly interested in the Auto Mag pistols. Read the articles of Bruce Stark.

Bruce Stark has kindly given me permission to put his articles on my site for everyone to enjoy. They are as follows: The Pasadena Days Auto Mag Collectables (Guide) In Search of 1250 fps Auto Mag …

Bruce is a hell of a nice guy. And an authority on Auto Mags.

A friend had one that he offered to trade for my NM M1 Garand. I had just bought the M1 and didn't want to get rid of it yet. Insert butt kicking emoticon here.

From an investment point of view, yes. From a practical point of view, I'd have kept the Garand.
