I usually have my ISO mattress tied to my pack as well so it blends it...

The only time I carry in CA is when I'm backpacking, and when I do it's my
XD45. I picked it up used for an insanely low price, it's dead reliable and since I installed a Powder River Precision trigger upgrade it sports a trigger that is arguably better than my Walther PPQ. Slightly longer reset than my PPQ, but zero take up and breaks like a grass rod.

I don't backpack per se. Tent camping at a campsite, hitting some trails and making s'mores is my extent of wilderness trekking. Therefore, it's me EDC...
XDs 9mm IWB custom kydex holster and a spare mag in my left front pocket.

If I decide to go deer hunting this year, I'll probably take the 1911 in a OWB holster.

I don't often hear about people defending themselves from anything in the CA woods with their gun.

I do hear about people dying or nearly dying because they got lost without water, adequate clothing, and no method of making fire.

In most of CA, and for most of the year hear, I'd feel safer with an extra bottle of water than with a gun.

Now, if I were a bad guy and wanted that sweet 357 that you have strapped to your side, I would shoot you before you ever see me because I see your gun.
If I wanted to rob a hiker in the woods, I probably wouldn't think about killing you first because we are out in the woods. I would want to rob you, so I might just come up to you casually and might even be seen by you before we were close to each other.
Ya, I know. There's a lot of ifs. But really, do you want to advertise your side arm in the woods were you might have a better chance at spotting danger if the bad guy didn't know you were carrying?

I bring it up because I see advantages in both concealed and open carry.
                    What do you guys think?

To each his own, I've just never felt the need to carry. I don't like to live my life thinking doomsday, worst case scenario stuff.
I'm not sure how I got lumped in to the, "I gots to be a carrying ifa I'ma goin' into the woods" crowd.
I simply posed a question about open vs concealed carry while in a position where one can see you from a long distance where you wouldn't see them.

And my example on Henry Coe State park is a valid one for anyone who knows this place and just how big it really is. Its the only State park I've ever felt a bit creepy about being 20 miles in with no protection.
There's enough water up there to create a vast growing network. And enough space to be virtually undetected.
Robbed, maybe not. Killed and have your little 9 YO raped? Quite possible to say the least.

Read CA penal code 12025 through 12027. it details how to carry for self protect during backcountry excursions such as fishing, hunting and going to those areas.
