The men I was referring to are often Veterans or just your average American who has a healthy dose of dormant street fighting cells in his DNA. In either case, neither members of the group require derogatory innuendo lectures about firearms proficiency from low experienced to average recreational shooters.

There must be a huge gap out there between the quiet man, Veteran or not, with a high likelihood of needing a pistol vs. those living & working in safe neighborhoods and ride their favorite pistols around the shooting range on weekends.

Perhaps it comes down to a state of readiness. And the men don't ask for advise and just acquire the hardware they need.

That might explain the 'ka-billion' annual pistols sales compared with the dwindling number of recreational shooters and training absence.

Stick with the names you know: Smith and Wesson, Glock, Ruger... stick to a light caliber: 38, 9mm.... remember that if you ever use a firearm in self defense, your proficiency in its use will come up in any litigation. Be ready to show proof that you knew what you were doing.

But seriously, if it is his first purchase, I would acknowledge that it is his right, but also remind him of the responsibility, regulations, specifically how they pertain to families with kids in the house, and maybe offer him a couple of business cards for some training courses.

It is sad that we can't just have free courses/classes for new firearm buyers.
