Every 929 I've been able to handle...only 3...have had tuned triggers.

Since the 929 is meant as a competition pistol, I would expect that this is what the factory anticipated. After all, why go to the expense of working on the trigger when the buyer was going to have it tuned anyway.

The intent was also that the gun be fired in DA. The wide target triggers really aren't suited for that

My understanding as to why the DA trigger is heavy is because the cylinder is big. 8 shot vs a 6 shot the diameter difference is what is making the extra weight. I believe the trigger is betwen 8-10 pounds which is normal. Trigger jobs on revolvers usually smooth out the action. If you lighten the trigger too much you end up getting light primer hits.

I'm using an extended firing pin to avoid light strikes. I'm also converting to DAO, I never shoot in single action in any revolver. I've never had an issue shooting the wide trigger in double action.

The gun shoots ok but the double pull is maybe 12lbs from factory. I'm looking to get down to 8lbs or less.

I think you might be mistaken as the 929 has a titanium cylinder ; which is lighter in weight.

Even if it weren't made of titanium, it really couldn't be much larger and still fit in the window of the frame...plus an 8-shot revolver would be lighter than a 6-shot one as more metal is removed for the additional 2 chambers

I had trigger/action work done on my 627 vcomp. Trigger is still heavy but it is smoother. Didn't read up on the 929 since I had no intent to buy. Titanium cylinder should be lighter than the regular steel. If I remember correctly my stock trigger pull was almost 10lbs. After work was done it was a bit over 8lbs. When I called S&W about my stock trigger not being very smooth compared to over PC guns I handled in local gun stores they said I can ship it to them and pay for their "Master Revolver Action Package" for a mere $165. Needless to say I was pretty pissed and sent it off to Sandy Burr Gun Ranch.

On a possibly related point, while helping a friend reinstall the DA sear on some SAE revolvers he recently purchased I noticed that S&W revolvers are coming from the factory bone dry inside - nothing even approaching lubrication down in the guts. Once a little CLP was applied everything got much smoother.
