I'm not knowledgeable regarding Kimber, but with my TRP operator and Les Baer are paired together or built together. So if you ever are buying a used 1911 you can tell if parts have been replaced or separated. I believe my Les also has the number in the barrel bushing as well.What we have done for ourselves alone dies with us

Okay, I got my answer! It seems that Kimber 1911's with the last three or four digits of the serial number etched inside the slide means that the slide and frame were mated during the early stages of production of the firearm and they were kept together to final assembly.
Explains why, even after 12 years, the pistol doesn't rattle and the slide to frame is very tight. I can assume that barrel, bushing, guide rod and cap were also fitted.Comment
