Getting a handgun under 21?

So here is my problem, I live close to the LAX range but am under 21 and can't purchase a handgun and don't see the poin in using a rifle there. Also My mother who lives alone is getting nervous and I suggested that we could both buy handguns and go shooting together. Sorta a bonding event ya know. Now she would be willing to buy them but I'm jsut not comfortable with having a registered gun in my name out of my safe and would probably attend the range more than she would. Anyone have a solution to getting it put in my name, are transfers legal? Thanks for the help.
