Glock19 gen 3 question

Hey ladies and gents,

So I just brought my Glock19 Gen 3 home after its 10 days of CA mandated imprisonment and I can't help but notice something that concerns me so I'm bringing it here to everyone with more experience! Keep in mind I have yet to fire this weapon.

The first thing I noticed was that locking in a fully loaded 10 round mag takes significantly more pressure than a mag with just 9 rounds in it. I've been told that Glock mags in general are notorious for having heavy springs and that they take time to "break in" as it were by leaving them loaded. Additionally racking the slide with a 10 rounder in there present a fair bit more friction when pulling the slide back. I do have the dreaded 2183 followers but from my research those seem unrelated.

I guess my question is is this normal? I've attached a couple images below if that helps.

I have a fair bit of firearms experience but my Glock specific experience is limited. I've attached a few images below if that helps!

What you have experienced is normal for new mags. After loading/unloading them a few times, it should be easier to rack the slide with the 10th round.

leaving a magazine spring loaded will not wear it out, you have to cycle the spring. After 800ish rounds my mags have loosened up considerably.

Switch out those followers asap, might as well grab a magazine disassembly tool, I wasn't comfortable doing it with a Allen wrench, you feel like your about to destroy those suckers.

Don't worry about the wear on the bottom of the slide, it will always look like that, never worse and never better.

Agreeing with folks' comments,
yes, it's normal for there to be much pressure from a loaded Glock mag, making it harder than some to cycle the slide. Consider having the slide locked back, prior to inserting the mag, then merely dropping the slide to load the first round. It's another discussion regarding how to drop the slide, whether using the slide-stop-lever or pulling slightly back on the already-locked-back slide. If you want to load it 10+1, drop the mag, but another round in the mag, and really press or slap the mag back into the G19.

The 2183 follower and 10-round mags give some people problems and other folks have reported zero problems. Test your gun with those mags prior to buying & replacing anything. In some cases, replacement 1812-3 followers haven't helped everybody either. Apparently, the 1812-6 followers are somehow different and aren't usually used to replace the 2183 followers. It's this reason why I seldom recommend a G19 to anyone, anymore.

As an alternative, the G26 seems to be very reliable with its 10-round mags, although many people will spend a bit more on some kind of aftermarket mag/pinky extension.

Yes, it is normal. They will break in after using them a few times. And if you have any feeding problems in ten round magazines, I suggest replacing the 2183-2 followers with 9mm3 followers. If you call Glock to complain, they may send them to you for free.

It's another discussion regarding how to drop the slide, whether using the slide-stop-lever or pulling slightly back on the already-locked-back slide.

GLOCK RECOMMENDS to fully pull back slide everytime to load a round in the chamber. There was an article in the Glock Autopistols magazine back in the 90's about that concern.

Also I was told that after everytime you cycle the slide with a round in the chamber and you eject it unfired, put that round somewhere else in the stack of rounds in the magazine. You don't want that bullet to be the next bullet cycled. It packs the bullet in tighter in the casing and when you have to use it in self defense, it may give you a issue. Just saying.

Pretty normal. Lock the slide back before you insert the mag. Later the springs will loosen up and it won't be a problem.

Or just ram in that magazine, hard. That will cause it to drop the slide, too

That being said, with FMJ rounds, don't expect any problems with the magazines. I have 8(!!) Glock 19 magazines, all of them 10 rounders, and never had a problem with them, or my Glock 19 (it's a gen4, to boot).

As has been hinted above, don't get into a habit of chambering and ejecting live rounds in your house. Beyond the normal safety issues, it can wear down the soft brass of the round in many ways (bullet seating, case wear from the slide/feed lips/extractor, etc).

I use my preban Gen 4 15 rounders...no issues at all...
