Correct Cody88. Might as well order a new recoil spring since you are already odering the plug and guide rod. As you mentioned, you are unsure of how many rounds were used by the previous owner.
Order the 16 lbs recoil spring(the Wolff brand, conventional spring) the GI style recoil plug (closed end), and the GI style (short) guide rod. It will be money well spent on a good gun.Last edited by DArBad; 06-06-2015, 2:30 PM.Comment

Wouldn't happen to have a Brownell's code would ya?If you're swapping out a full length guide rod to a GI-style set up, just replace the original parts with these two parts:
Explore handgun parts (1,389) at Brownells, including slides, barrels, and triggers to repair, upgrade, or customize your handgun for improved performance.

You can use the factory-provided coil spring. I like Wolff springs myself. For a .45 ACP 1911, 16LB is the standard recoil spring weight. Cheers! --1911ShooterPhilComment

Just make sure the new GI plug you are using isn't too wide and rubbing hard against the inside of your slide. Also make sure it clears your barrel's lower lug.Comment

Big reason is I'm not a fan of needing an Allen Wrench for disassembly/cleaning. Seen many people shoot just fine without one, although that doesn't matter much because either way it's more accurate than I. On a smaller note, I guess wieght plays a small part too.Comment

So basically it's a personal preference thing than a performance issue?Comment

Thanks for the explanation. I have 3 1911's (Springfield, Kimber & Les Baer) and never really paid attention to the innards, I just take them apart, clean and reassemble. I'm relieved that I don't need to spend any more $$ on them, this modding stuff gets addicting!Comment

Yeah I feel ya, my first baby is due later this month so I'm getting this sense of "if you're gonna do it do it now" when it comes to mods.
Once again thank you everyone for the help, in my Brownells cart I have the Wolff 16# recoil spring, Wilson Combat government recoil spring guide, and a stainless Wilson ringed recoil spring plug to match the stainless barrel.Comment

I think I have seen 1 Brownells coupon this year.
Try Midway:
Those flat wire is suppose to last 10 times of a regular coil spring (at least Wilson's version and Wilson's claim).
I like regular maintenance (even if round count is not up high), so the cheaper normal coils spring are for me.Comment

Double Post, but here is exactly what I ordered. Midway ended up being a tad cheaper both with items and shipping, and the coupon code 5ZS posted sealed the deal.uploadfromtaptalk1433624862084.jpg. Will follow up when it arrives the 15th! Baby is due the 23rd!Comment
