    1911 45 converted to 9 mm question.

    All,

Silly question and i think i know the answer but just wasn't 100% sure.

If i already own 1911 and send it back to the Manufacturer and pay to have it converted to 9 mm. Is their any issues to the fact the Manufacturer modified it and sent it back as gun not on roster? The model as a 45 is on roster but as a 9 mm (they do make one) is not on roster.

    Thanks

I dont think thats possible. Some say that the mags wont fit on a 45. Why not just buy a RIA in 38 super and get the 9mm barrel and mags? It will end up costing the same if it is possibpe to convert a 45 to 9mm. I could be wrong but never have I seen any 45s converted to 9mm.

No, but it will probably cost as much as a new gun.

This is the most cost effective route. All 1911 mags should fit inside any 1911 frame. The only difference between the mags are the followers, feedlips, spacers if needed, and basepads.

The frame is the gun.... so as long as the same serialized part is returned, no problem
Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)

Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

What your are doing is no problem because you already own the gun. You can modify it to your heart's content as long as the mods are CA legal. Now the cost is what's going to stop you. You most likely will have to find a custom shop instead of the OEM manufacturer to do this.

As long as the cost is not prohibitive, you are not going to have issues. I'd rather do like the others suggested and pick up a second pistol.

I have a Colt Commander in 9mm and converted it to fire .45 ACP. Remember frames are all the same regardless whether they it is a 9mm, .38 super, .40 SW or .45 ACP. In my case I just needed to a series 70 Commander upper assembly in .45 which I found on this forum. With a new slide, new mags, recoil spring and a .45 ejector. If I remember correctly I found a complete upper and all the other parts for $200. So now I have one handgun with 2 uppers.

Sounds cool! One of the smoothest 1911's I ever shot was a colt 1911 .45ACP converted to 9mm. I don't remember if it was 4.5 or 5 inch, but it was sweet & accurate!

                    Good luck OP!

You can not "modify" a .45 1911 to shoot 9mm, but they certainly can build a top end (slide/barrel etc) that will drop on. Yes, it is 100% legal because I did it and called Cali DOJ to make sure. If the receiver is legal, you can put any caliber top on it you want.

Unless you're law enforcement, an off-roster handgun is not legal to obtain.

                              Wrong.

You can PPT an off-roster pistol.
You can bring one into the state via intrafamilial transfer (gift from parent, child).

And finally, in this specific case, he already OWNS an on-roster pistol.
He is wanting to modify it to fire a different caliber.
                              This is legal.
As long as the manufacturer/shop doing the modification does not replace the frame, it's legal.
