    HSC

Do I need a Hand Gun Safety Certificate when buying a used handgun that is no longer on the list, and will be a PTP sale?? Or is it just for new purchases?? I noticed my cert just expired the 1st of May, and I'm thinking about picking a revolver. Taking the test again is a PITA.

Yes....but it's no longer an "HSC" it's an "FSC". The FSC is good for both handguns and long guns. Needed unless you're considered "Exempt"....ie. Have a current/Valid hunting license, you are retired Military or L.E.O. etc. Many more exemptions but too many to list here.....but you get the point. The test is only 30 questions and you can miss up to 7 answers so it's no big deal. If you can't pass it you really shouldn't be handling a firearm. HTH c good

The hardest part is that to pass you have to think like an anti-gun person
But seriously, a number of the questions have major exceptions that can throw you if you are knowledgeable about gun laws and over-think the question, but the questions say "In general...." so the simplest answer is generally correct, including the "All of the above" questions, of which there are several, so don't jump in and mark the first "correct" answer you see, as there may be 2 more.

If you are worried, there is a study guide on the DOJ site.

Hunting license is only good for LONG GUN purchases, not good for handgun purchases. And IIRC you can actually use an expired hunting license for a long gun purchase if the expired one you have was for the previous season at the time of your purchase. Anyhow, CCW is a good exemption for handgun purchases.

And yes, you need a FSC or exemption even if buying used and PPT.

OK... It looks like I'm gonna have to bite the bullet and take another test... Is Wildsports still offering them?? Funny story. I went to pick up a rifle I 'd won in auction a couple of weeks ago, and figured my HSC would work. Not so since it had expired. Had to go buy a hunting license at a local Big Five, and there I had to dig out a license number off a license from..... 1972. The only one my son could find in the top drawer of my dresser. Hey the number worked... :-)
            Thanks for the info....

I took the test about 5 years ago at Wild sports and they made me make an appt., I suspect because I wasn't buying a gun there. Might want to call before you go to see if that is still their policy.

But only for handguns. Long guns will require a FSC
