80% 1911

My phone keeps screwing up when I try to use the search drop down. I'm sorry if this has been asked before. :/ I'm trying to locate a place where I can finish machining an aluminum 80% lower for my 1911 project. Buying a jig and a drill press or mill are kind of beyond my means. Any suggestions?

Not leagal to do. You must complete the machining yourself with your own tools. If that is beyond your means I suggest buying a complete 1911 from your LGS.

I agree. Unless you plan on building ten, twenty or more 1911s. Go for it.

If it is going to be your only 1911 or you just like to tinker. Just buy a Rock Island and learn on that.

Recent tips; if you are building a Commander, a Government bushing will not work. 38 Super parts are for 38 Supers. "drop in" is wishful thinking.

If you want to build from the frame up and pick parts yourself, there are several 07 FFLs who will do SSEv2 now, where you can buy the frame and send it to them to build up as single-shot, break-top pistols. After the DROS is done you get the frame and can build it to your hearts content.

Good luck. My single-shot, break-top pistol is being built right now by Limited-10 down in San Diego, and I will be transferring it through Riflegear in Fountain Valley.

If you're dead set on building it yourself, buy the jigs and tools then re-sell. The jigs at least will not lose much value if you re-sell but don't fool yourself. You will build more.

I believe you also must originally manufacture el pistola as a break-top or bolt-action, via SSEv2, as alluded to by pklin1297.
Just building it as a single-shot, SSEv1, won't fly with the law. If'n it was me, I'd go and read up on the laws and be damn sure.

You can no longer "Single-Shot" convert a firearm that was once a semi-auto.

It remains possible to originally manufacture a new firearm into a compliant Single-Shot configuration to escape the provisions of the "Unsafe Handgun" statute.

Whether that action, by persons not licensed as an FFL07, would violate the "Zip Gun" statute is still an open question.

It is, but you must technically build it as a break-top single single shot first. By law it must exist in that state for at least an instant. Then you can convert it how you like.

Im still a little weary.....i would hate for the wrong cop and the wrong judge to not know whats going on and then take my 1911 and make me a felon and take any other gun i had away from me.

You can never fix ignorance or stupidity in a leo that is prone to those. If you are paranoid do not build anything 80% and never ask leo or lgs for advice on firearms laws.

Don't be scared off, there are myriad ways to build it as a single shot break action.

I have seen some 80% built up 1911s that were extremely bice.
