    Colt python barrel swap

I want to change out the barrel of my python. I know this is not a DYI or novice gunsmith operation. Does any body know of a gunsmith on OC who they would trust their gun with to do it? I don't want to ship it to Colt.

Remember that Colt changed the threads in the 90's, what year is your gun and what year is the barrel? They are not interchangeable.

My gun is a 1976. The front sight has two pins and so does the barrel. My understanding is that is how you tell if they are compatible.

Yes that is correct. When Colt changed the threads they also changed the front sight to a single pin.

            I wouldn't unless it is a repair.

I vote to send it to Colt, why take any chances with your Python?

I had a squib load and with hearing protection, I didn't notice it and bulged my Python's barrel. I sent it back to Colt and was very happy with the quality and speed of having them replace the barrel. For a Python, I'd send it to Colt. I bought a 1917 Colt New Service that had a bulged barrel because I could get it cheap - I found a barrel on ebay (back then) and had a local shop put it on. It was fine, too - but it wasn't my Python.

I say don't listen to them and do it with your eyes closed & using just your left hand.

I've always been looking for a slightly damaged Colt I could afford.

honestly though if you really need to change it out I have to say I'm another vote for ...

The best piece of advice you'll get all day?

Buy one with the barrel length you want and sell yours, or offer a trade for a Python of equal condition.

Unless you have some kind of emotional attachment to the gun, this will be your cheapest and least risky option.

If you have some attachment to the thing, send it to COLT. That will also keep the value up should you decide to sell it in the future vs. some random gunsmith doing the installation.

+1 for send it to Colt to ensure it gets done right, and is fully covered.
