    Some 'informed' help please.

Hi there, I am a new member that has been lurking a while and apologize for my second post being a 'help me' post. I moved to CA from TX approx 4 years ago (wife in tow) and brought with me a legally purchased ( by her ) Sig 226 9mm. When I arrived I asked my local turners on the correct protocol and was told no action was required.
I have since forgot about it until now, I am getting divorced ( I get the Pistol ) and my buddy said I have to get the weapon transferred over to me. He also mentioned though, That he thought I should have registered it here when I arrived. Anyone shed any light on my correct and legal next step?

Register it here ( think I found the correct form online) or just do a transfer before my divorce?

    Ty in advance.

I can't speak to the divorce but the Peoples Republic requires you to register a handgun with the CA DOJ within ?? days of bringing it into the state. ALL of the gang-bangers and felons comply with this law religiously. I have no idea how many law-abiding citizens comply...

I asked two LE officers ( friends) and neither were sure so thought this would be the place to know. I just want this pistol legal ( if it isnt) and in my name. I read the 60 day on here but in my case could I just do the spousal transfer?

Yeah you were supposed to register it when you moved here,

Its not in the CA system so just download the personal handgun importer form from the CA DOJ and send it in along with your check for $19 and they'll get it registered to you.

Be sure you didn't import any 11+ round mags when you came into the state

There is a form and a $19 fee to submit to register the handgun. You may be able to find a link to the printable form on DOJ/BOF's website, or someone here may have the link already.

I'm not sure how the transfer between married or divorced individuals work, but it might be wise CYA to just take it to a local FFL to PPT ($35 fee involved) it from your wife to you. That should also count as "registration" instead of sending in the other form/fee.

I would agree with Jeffm on this one. Best thing to do in this type of situation is to go to an FFL and do the PPT.

If they are coming from another state, where you don't have to 'PPT' guns a man can give his wife a gun and vice versa in most places without paperwork.

The state of CA doesn't even know the gun exists (and if you came into the state before 1991 they don't have to)

Possession of an unregistered gun is not illegal in the state of CA, only the importation or transfer of one improperly is.

I agree with you Ajax22, however, what if the wife turns Psycho and starts all kinds of lies?
