686 S&W or Ruger GP100?

I've been researching this question because I'm in the market as well. From all I've read and heard, the GP100 is a good gun and built like a tank. Good carry and defensive gun. For target/range use everyone recommends the 686. I've handled both and the 686 has a better trigger and more refined action. The S&Ws also hold their value better. Probably the revolver experts here have more things to say. I ended up going for a 625 in the end. -
Either revolver will probably outlive you with normal use. For me, the smith handles better than the ruger. If however, you plan to shoot max charge heavy bullet reloads, go with the ruger."I don't like repeat offenders, I like DEAD offenders!" ~Ted Nugent

It's a Ford/Chevy argument. Both are medium frame, super strong and accurate. Neither is stronger than the other. Other frames this isn't the case and the Ruger is stronger, not here however.
I'm a S&W guy, always have been, but I own a few Rugers too and they are well made.
Both Ruger and S&W make SS and blue steel versions of these medium frame .357s, so try before you buy.
The bottom line is that the trigger is generally better on the S&W and a trigger job makes that even more so. Less commonly the Ruger trigger can be made as nice, but it's harder to do.Igitur qui desiderat pacem, praeparet bellum.Comment

S&W and Colt are like Ford and Chevy.
Ruger is like Hyundai.

OK, I was trying to be diplomatic. Everyone votes with their $$, so here's my vote.

I had this in 6" in '83, then I had it in stainless 2.5", but the short ejector rod bothered me - didn't pop the shells out, then I had it in stainless 4" and sold it to Riviepop - thanks man, we both got what we needed - I prefer it in blue steel.
4" 586/686 rocks!Igitur qui desiderat pacem, praeparet bellum.Comment

is a great revolver. I was able to hit golfballs at about 8 yards with no problem.
