Yesterday I picked up my first Glock, a nice Gen3 G23 that's pretty much identical to tens of thousands of other G23's. While waiting the requisite 10 days to ensure if I wanted to harm myself or others I'd use my .357 instead, I'd also had MidwayUSA send me a conversion barrel in 9mm and a couple of OEM G19 magazines. Ran out to the local range today to gratify my urge for GSR all over my hands.
I started out shooting 30 rounds in .40 S&W, figuring I'd save the remaining 20 rounds to keep at home, shot 50 rounds in 9mm, then said "What the heck!" and shot the remaining 20 .40 caliber rounds; I'll buy some JHP self-defense rounds for home. So that means I changed calibers twice, once from .40 to 9mm and once from 9mm back to .40. All I did to change calibers was change barrels and magazines; I did not mess with springs, extractors, ejectors, etc.
Well, now I can report that I had 99.5% reliability out of my first Glock in the first 100 rounds. In my last magazine of .40, I experienced one light strike. I could see only a faint mark on the primer of the lightly struck round. I put it back in the magazine and the second try it went boom. I figure with the Glock this new this still falls under the break-in period, though part of me was really hoping I'd have one of those "never experienced any hiccups" relationships with my G23.
I did not find the .40 FMJ to be excessively snappy. I think a lot of the buzz about how snappy .40 is and how long it takes to re-acquire a sight picture after each shot is overstated. But then again I don't have a problem shooting my S&W 340PD in .357 Magnum.
I did all my shooting today from 7 yards. Below are pics of my final and best groups in each caliber.
BTW, I had a real nice experience purchasing from the Glock Store in San Diego. The price was right, $499 plus $25 DROS plus $10 their fee. Far from trying to upsell me and ask if I wanted fries with that, I overheard them several times talk people out of spending their money on "upgrades" (though on second thought they did recommend--and offer for a fee--training). Brady was professional and efficient while at the same time making me feel he was in no rush and happy to address my questions, demonstrate field stripping, etc.
tl;dr - I'm a happy camper!
