My first range visit

I've just received my new glock 19, range bag, ammo, (missing the most important rounds) hearing protection, eye protection etc....... I'm planning my first range day Wednesday...
My first question, I bought the Glock 19 and realize that both mags came with 2183-2 followers. I've purchased 4 more mags, all have the same follower. I've read some pretty discouraging threads regarding these followers. Has this been worked out by Glock?
My second question, I am going to use Hornady Critical Duty 135GR +p as my HD round (the round that was missing in my ammo order) My goal Wednesday is to practice, practice, practice.... I can't afford to practice all the time with the Hornady but when that order comes in I'll go back to the range and cycle a few boxes. So the question is, should I start with 115gr 124gr, or 147gr? I have all three in FMJ. Which would most resemble the Hornady load?

Don't start changing stuff until you shoot it a lot and figure out IF you need to change anything. A lot of G19s run just fine with 2183s.

For new guns I prefer to start with high quality heavy round. I just bought a case of Federal American Eagle 9mm 147gr to run through my new G17 and G34. DON'T start with the cheapest junk ammo you can find. If you have a problem you'll never know if it's the gun or the ammo and MOST of the time it's the ammo. After you've run several hundred rounds of good ammo and are confident the gun is working well then you'll be fine with cheap plinking ammo.

There's nothing wrong the the Hornady you chose, but there's nothing wrong with lots of other HD ammo. You need to be able to afford to shoot some of it routinely to be certain your gun 'still' likes it.

It should be obvious that 115gr cheap ammo isn't going to be anything like 135gr +P ammo. But shoot up what you got a shoot it a lot (start with the heaviest) then buy more and buy some training. Don't worry about HD ammo to start with. But with what you have listed, some high quality 147gr range ammo will be the closest but still no the same.

My 147gr as well as the 124gr are made by Remington. The 115gr is made by Blazer Brass, and a few hundred rounds of American Eagle, everything is FMJ. You gave me the answer I need, I'll start with the 147gr, I've got 200 rounds of that, I'll be happy if I can get through all that in one day. Glad to hear the 2183 followers are working.

Is this your first handgun? If so you should take a defensive pistol course before you teach yourself bad habits.

I've had no issues with those followers in all my Glock magazines that have been purchased/manufactured recently (about 10 magazines). Honestly, for ammo, any factory round should be good as a starting point. For a +p FMJ load, I'd recommend the Winchester 124 gr. NATO fmj round since it is rated as +P, if you want a higher pressure round to try and replicate your Hornady round.

All in all, I've never had issues with any of my Glocks, with any round, factory or reloaded. Good luck!

This is great advice, I shot for years until I took my first pistol class I did not realize I little I knew about handling a weapon. There is much to learn about correct technique and safe handling. Its much more than loading a magazine, slapping it in and pulling the trigger.

Great choice on the G19, I would post where you are going and maybe a fellow Calgunner can meet you at the range.

Yes Seaweed02 I'm already feeling the pinch with the gun lock box, range bag, and all the other wonderful accessories... Just got done putting on my Talon grips, they make the 19 even more comfortable than I could imagine. Do they have handgun annonymous? Something tells me I'm going to be spending lots of money...

As with just about anything, the hardware is just the down payment and in the case of a firearm it is a small one, the real cost is learning and practicing the skills you learn. Enjoy.

Use the heavier loads, besides shooting a little.softer they will cycle a newer gun with stiffer.springs better. As far as the followers go, you'll know if there is an issue within the first 5 rounds. If you do experience.FTE's and stovepipes call Glock and they will send new followers. Also, if you don't already know, do not remove the copper factory lube on the slide. Its all you'll need for the first.1,000 rounds at least.

Now op may I ask, what made you settle on a glock?

I had heard that Glocks were pretty much idiot proof.
My wife and I are getting up there in age, and it was her idea (I didn't argue) that we bought something to defend ourselves.
I went to a local range that rented handguns. I shot a number of handguns (actually went wanting to buy G21SF) I felt the most comfortable with the 19. I figure the wife will end up with it one day, as I become more comfortable with the 19. Something tells me this is not going to be the last handgun I buy.
