Range reload accuracy?

I have been breaking in my new S&W 686 SSR at the local range, and have been using their reloads.

Just when I think I have the sights dialed in, I get weird, wild hits on the target. Seems totally random.

Could this be because I am using their in-house reloads? I notice that the brass is always different: make, age etc.

Or am I just looking for any excuse but my technique?

I would never use a reload not made by myself; unless it was from a well known, reputable manufacturer.
I've seen gun show reloads break a firing pin in a Marlin 30-30, have primers backing out excessively (possible high pressure indicator); have keyholing, deep primer indentions with primer flow (possible high pressure indicator) and with erratic velocities.

It is never a good idea to break in a piece AND wish for accuracy when using
other's handloads.

Economy is their rule, not accuracy.

Use factory ammo till you get the feel for the gun.

Depends, I had a Marlin Camp carbine .45acp that loved the commercial range reloads by Justice. Are they still in business even?

It's hard to say. I've had range reloads that shoot wildly, and others are quite accurate.
There was a batch of 1000 9mm reloads from a well known company, that will not work in my glocks. They would tumble and scatter even at 7 yards, making roughly 8 inch groups. The same gun with factory load can shoot less than 1 inch at 7 yards in my hands.

Try some factory loads, and see if they make the difference. If so, don't use the range load again.

For my 686, the best target load has velocity around 750 fps with 148 gr HBSC. If velo more than 800 fps ( +P or magnum ) then less accuracy ( need to reduce the twist rate of the barrel groove ), the HBSC is the best because the Hollow Base allow even pressure to the bullet and Swat Cutter make a clear round hole.

I use Miwall reloads for just plinking.. That's it!

If your trying to sight in your sights, use match ammo for best results..
