Looked on my shelf today at work and saw about six boxes of 356tsw corbon. 124gr 1450 fps. Just a 9mm but never seen it stated like that on the box. Anyone know anyting about 356tsw?

Was a "super 9mm" caliber for some S&W Performance Center pistols.
Suppose to compete with the .38Super, 9x21mm and 9x23mm competition pistols.
Didn't really pan out.
Pretty much, .356TSW ended up with the same fate as the .41AE.sigpic

356TSW a good cartridge introduced at the wrong time. This is basically a 9x21.5mm. It was created by S&W during the height of the IPSC racegun period (late 80's-early 90's). As I understand it, S&W and USPSA had some tacit agreement to have S&W develop a Major9 cartridge (when major was 175PF) that would fit in the shorter 9mm frames. Federal made the initial ammunition which was a 147gr@1220fps and S&W made the initial guns Super9 through the Perf Ctr. The whole thing was a bust because by the time the guns/ammo came out IPSC Unlimited went to fullsize frame 38Super/38TJ with extended mags that held 20rds. The 356TSW guns weren't the hot setup because they were 16-17rds and also based on the 3rd gen S&W autos with a slide mounted safety. So, the 356TSW couldn't find a niche in Unlimited and Limited closed up when the 40cal rule went into effect. That put the 356TSW out in the cold and there was some harsh feelings between S&W and USPSA about that. After major PF was dropped to 165, then hot loaded 9x19 could make that and it really made the 356TSW irrelavant in competition.
I always regret that S&W didn't promote the 356TSW in the selfdefense market. A precursor to the 357Sig. It would have been nice to have a 5906/4 size pistol with 16rds of 125gr/1400fps. But by this time, S&W is promoting their 40SW in that market and they didn't want to create competition for themselves. Nevertheless the 356TSW is a well designed cartridge, much like the 9x23Win, designed for high pressures in mind. Last time I checked, Starline still made brass and the Corbon loads used Starline brass. It's not fair to compare the 356TSW to the 9x23Win or any other full-length cartridge, but for it's size it was quite a performer.Luck favors the prepared.
