I have an opportunity to purchase a Colt Python, 4", blue finish, manufactured ~1980, k4xxxx for (possibly) $1,800, the owner may be stuck at $2k. It is in very good condition with the original wood grips. What do you think, good deal or pass?

Python, good deal?
sigpicTags: None -
Not sure if serious but ever 2.4k is a good deal in the condition you describe -
Ok thanks I am serious. This is a friend's gun that I have been working on him for some time now. A couple of years really. I just donate know the market other than what I see on gunbroker. Thanks for your input!sigpicComment

Given the recent market activity for Python's, I would say that $1800.00 to $2000.00 is a fair price. Certainly higher than a few years back, but it appears to be within the current range. Not a screaming deal, but if wanted a good Python I would pay that price.Last edited by 003; 04-15-2015, 12:54 PM.Comment

^^^ what he said
An excellent / 95+% Python goes for +/- $3k. People saying $1800-$2000 are dreaming or just naming prices they've seen here and there without considering condition, paper/box or not. Ya they exist on gunbroker, but are usually in bad to OK condition with finish wear. The good ones (95%+) on Gunbroker a go for $2500+, but, it's off roster.
CA ones easily sells higher because we have this roster BS.
I've collected quite a few myself and always looking for more. And all the good ones I've seen here on Calguns goes for $3k+. And they are gone with multiple takers just like that.
***here, if in near mint /95+% condition, I'll give you $2200 for it =).Last edited by Pistol; 04-15-2015, 10:48 PM.Comment

- Blued is a plus,
- 1980's manufacturer, not so great, but not bad since it's a blued version.
- A 4" is also common; but many people like the 4" model the best for actual use rather than being a safe Queen, or 8" target-only gun - so 4" models are the hardest to find in excellent condition. Most 4" guns got carried, holstered, thrown around a lot, or lived under a car seat.
If in very good condition with its original grips, I think $1,800 to $2,000 is a good deal. You could shoot it, carry it, and if you felt like selling it just a year from now, I bet you could get $2,300 for it.

$1800 for a 4" 357 revolver? Seriously??? Buy yourself a ruger gp100 match champion and buy yourself a really nice 1911.
And no, the Python won't "go up in value". The dollar will just become worth less and less.NRA Life Member since 1990

you've been working on this transaction for quite awhile and your friend has proposed a very reasonable price for you. if you really like this Colt, go with the program and pick it up. if at some time you decide to sell the Colt, it would be a kind gesture to give your friend first dibs.Comment

Thanks for all of the good info.
I've seen the Baboosh collection... crazy.
My step dad has wanted a Python for 20+ years, never has had a chance to own one. I've grown to like them over the last few years. I'm really not that interested in any other wheel guns (if I were the gp100 would be awesome though).
Mentally I can't get over paying $2k... we'll see, I'm talking to the owner today.sigpicComment
